loads of jobs require to be reached constantly, you'll need one in that case

if you're someone who doesn't need to call all day for business, it's only got use for emergencies or when you're as socially handicaped as the people using social media i.e. constantly need to be fed communication to give you the illusion not you're leading your live alone.

Never had one.

My home phone, landline, rings maybe once a week, don't really need that either.

I do have a CB in my car, an old one.

Wow you must have avoided the telemarketers somehow. They keep calling me constantly about surveys and crap. I usually tell them to suck it and to take my number of their list but they never do it.

didn't know that even still exists! Don't know if and how much that's used here.

Personally, I fell for a smartphone last few years because of the toy-aspect of it, and my internet addiction (well, it's not that bad). Right now I'm cutting with the mobile internet and taking just a bit of calling space. For me this is cheaper than the landline I have. And that few phonecalls a month/year I make totally ain't worth spying on, lol.

Re: Is a cell phone a necessity?
For safety measures parents give their kids phones. That's a whole other debate. As a parent you'd want to be able to keep tabs on your kid and check up on them, but at the same time seems you open them up to other possible problems if they can connect with other people. "Sexting" is one example and maybe bullying, or strangers getting their phone number, etc.

Parental controls can limit possible dangers but the fact is that kids are generally more tech savy then their parents and can even get around those controls.

Don't have to worry about that myself, my kid's a baby. But oh how worrysome the future can be.

Years ago, I had them calling often. They would ask for "Mr so and so", and I would say, sure, hold on, I will get him.

I would then place the phone next to my radio, tuned to a Chinese language/music station, and just go about my business.

Did that for about 6 months. Never got any more calls . I actually miss screwing with them.

Sigh.

Depends on how it is used. I'd say the mobility of the cell phone for entertainment socializing etc use is the biggest difference and really can divert someone from reality on a constant basis. Where as when you're on a computer you're stationary and focused and not necessarily multitasking life with technology. What say you, whats the big difference?

Cell phone are NOT a necessity for most people. I've lived all my life without one.

Also they cause brain tumors, especially in those who started using them as children or teens.

Teens have a thinner skull than adults. Children have thinner skulls than teens. Do the math.

The more recent phones emit a stronger field than the phones of 10 years ago.

I might not still be alive, but mark my words, by the year 2022, there will be an explosion of brain tumors among young adults. I wouldn't be surprised if brain tumors were 5 or ten times more common than they are now.

Re: Is a cell phone a necessity?
Open question to all.

Are they really necessary for everyone? Should everyone have their own?

You can of course do with out one, but in case of an emergency they would really come in handy. Plus this day and age with technology existing at every corner it seem like an essential thing to carry.
 Quoting: alien

They should exist ONLY for emergency situation, (NO ONE has a reason to be on phone away from home or office except for that) or at the most, texting only necessary messages.

Prepaid, not contracts.

Otherwise, cell phones are one of THE top symbols of sheeple mentality, herding behavior, the willful participation, without ANY legitimate basis, in something that is dangerous and intrusive.

Sheer lunacy.

not necessarily. It depends on your lifestyleneeds. They can be terrible little spies on you though... Putting "bugs" and "wiretapping" solidly into the olden days category... Unless you really, really know your phone/computer security.

Plus, they give off harmful radio waves and you're expected to pur that sucker right up to your head if you want to be heard or hear. Not the best way to communicate, overall. However, for some people, it is a practical purchase due to their lifestyle.

In case of emergency have useful things, like flares and a glass breaker in your car, and potable water and radio at home. There's no cell reception in the boonies or during disasters like earthquakes, don't bank on false security.

If cell phones all stopped working tomorrow, most people would be "Lost" they dont know how to "DO things" any more. We used to have a list of phone numbers memorized in our heads at a moments notice. We had to know how to spell, we actually talked to one another face to face. My brother and his girlfriend sat at opposite ends of the table at christmas and texted each other rather than talking. post any other items you feel cell phones have taken away or changed.

Ok If you spend half a second to set up a deal alert for a prepaid cell phone, one can usually pick it up(with minutes) for next to nothing.

Not having one in your vehicle for emergencies is just irresponsible at this point. You don't need to put it in your name if you think the Illuminati are closing in...yoda

No they are not necessary. When i grew up not to long ago, I'm 44. We all knew where every person was. We had a note book next to the phone. We were always home when we said we were going to be, or we called first if we were going to be late. Cell phones have taken over a large part of parenting.
 Quoting: Medic

I agree with that last part. Technology in general has really taken over too much with parenting but society is letting it happen. Example, I had a lot of questions for my son's pediatrician about his feedings and at one point he told me to refer to the some website for feeding tips. I was floored. Yea the internet is a great place for general information, but in this case I wanted an expert in person to help with specific advice.

Of course, how else would you call people? With an old lady phone that actually plugs into the wall? Nobody uses those any more, and good luck finding one of the three remaining payphones.

I lost mine a couple of months ago, never replaced it, and haven't missed it a bit. I don't feel like my right temporal lobe is cooked to medium-well any more. I do use Skype two or three times a week, though. But Skype doesn't give me that bbq'ed brain feeling like the cell did.

While I agree with you, that cell phones cause cancer.
The skull part is wrong. The skull doesn't stop radiation, even in adults. Radiation goes straight through bone.

It's like smoking. It's extremely unlikely for someone who's been smoking 2 years to have lung cancer. But at 20 years, the chance goes up a lot. And someone who smokes a pack a day, has a worse chance than someone who just smokes 2 a day.
Do teens use cell phones more than adults? It depends, but I think on average they do. so in 2022, young adults might be developing higher rates of cancers than older people. But it's not going to be due to the thickness of the skull, but rather the total amount of radiation they were exposed to.

oh well, we aren't gonna make it to that date anyway...
