Is a cell phone a necessity?

I don't own one myself. Haven't had one in years. My husband has an older model that's basically only for phone calls. He shares it with me and we use it instead of a landline and it doesn't have any of the fancy apps.

I have a kid and I feel like maybe I NEED one of my own on me in case something happens somewhere.

I don't miss mine after 2 years or the 200$ month bill.

No they are not necessary. When i grew up not to long ago, I'm 44. We all knew where every person was. We had a note book next to the phone. We were always home when we said we were going to be, or we called first if we were going to be late. Cell phones have taken over a large part of parenting.

I wouldn't think twice about getting my own phone if I could just get a PHONE, that just dials in and out. Who knows if they sell those anymore. These new fangled things are too expensive.

For emergencies, yes. If you car breaks down in the middle of nowhere you will be glad to have one. I'd get one without the monthly plan though.

I agree with that last part. Technology in general has really taken over too much with parenting but society is letting it happen. Example, I had a lot of questions for my son's pediatrician about his feedings and at one point he told me to refer to the some website for feeding tips. I was floored. Yea the internet is a great place for general information, but in this case I wanted an expert in person to help with specific advice.

Yea thats what I'm thinking. I didn't know you could get one without montly plans. Even the pay as you go phones seem to only last a month or so even if you haven't used your minutes.

No, my old phone is "an old log" so will not work soon. I'm all good with that and won't be replacing it

They should exist ONLY for emergency situation, (NO ONE has a reason to be on phone away from home or office except for that) or at the most, texting only necessary messages.

It is for emergency purposes, but if you can't afford it, you don't need it. Especially in survival situation, cell phone would be useless as a used condom.

Definitly understandable for work. Seems like the biggest overwhelming reason to get one for personal use is in case of emergencies. I haven't seen a pay phone anywhere in years.

if you're someone who doesn't need to call all day for business, it's only got use for emergencies or when you're as socially handicaped as the people using social media i.e. constantly need to be fed communication to give you the illusion not you're leading your live alone.

My home phone, landline, rings maybe once a week, don't really need that either.

I do have a CB in my car, an old one.

They are a necessity for some, I don't have a landline, haven't for years, I use my smartphone to keep in touch with my very large family.

Easy living without one.

I refuse to get a cell phone. Do fine without it.

It can sure come in handy when you need to look something up while you are out. I despise most trends especially the "antisocial media" phenomenon but have many uses for my smartphone. I do not need to carry a camera anymore because there is an 8mp shooter in the phone, and I can access the web when necessary. Good for emergency situations also.
I am 20 and because I do not use antisocial media my main form of contact is through my phone - by calling people or emailing them, so for me, it is a necessity.
