It's not publicized, but each platform does have that switch.

Go and see. It's on every platform. The MTA likely doesn't want the undesirables to know it's there, but it is there.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19127552

its probablt there for servicing requirements or local shutoff for emergency sevices.

there is guaranteed to be one there.

also i can tell you for a fact if i thought this guy was going to step on the track id find it and switch it off until some kind of authority arrived.

Yes, there sure is.

LOL, it also says, "they are not on the platform", do you have trouble reading English? Brauchst du mich auf Deutsch zu stellen, damit Sie es durch Ihre dicken Schädel zu bekommen?
 Quoting: 1nf1del

do you have trouble using your mind to elaborate?

its obviously not on the platform itself its near the tunnels.

you see they are telling us exactly where it is

Re: Drunken Man Electrocuted to Death on NYC Subway (Video is Graphic) Dont watch if you dont want to see it!
should there be an auto cut off if someone is detected on the tracks in a platform area?!!?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19132951

Amny sane person would THINK so.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13468132

a system could be put in place, so that the platform section of the track is only live if a train is actually there.

easily done.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19132951

that would be a good idea, and undergound third rail that carries power, and a switch that activates the next section of track when the train passes over it, then disables power when the train passes.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13468132

something like that would work, or it could be the train bridges the gap and makes the platform section live.

Do Not Pull the Emergency Brake Cord

Use the emergency brake cord only when the motion of the subway presents an imminent danger to life and limb. Otherwise, do not activate the emergency brake cord, especially in a tunnel. Once the emergency brake cord is pulled, the brakes have to be reset before the train can move again, which reduces the options for dealing with the emergency

That would be fine if the people on the platform were in a subway car. There is no emergency brake cord on the platform.

Re: Drunken Man Electrocuted to Death on NYC Subway (Video is Graphic) Dont watch if you dont want to see it!
Well, I draw two conclusions:

1.) Each NYC platform does have a power shutoff switch, most likely at the far end and probably slightly into the tunnel where the maintenance access is. Although it may be in a slightly "off limits" area, it is COMPLETELY physically accessible. The clerk himself, a 62-year-old man, had to be able to sprint down the platform, find it, and activate it, all before the train arrived from the next station.

This would imply that it is accessible to anyone from platform level.

2.) The NYC transit company MTA does not want people screwing with it, so they don't bother to announce the fact that they exist, which is a HUGE safety violation... because pretty much every other goddamn subway line in the 1st world has them clearly marked.

It was 2 different issues. He was claiming there no emergency brakes accessible to passengers on the train. There is.

And every platform has a 3rd rail off switch, ON the platform. It apparently not well known, but it's there.

Not ONE of those stupid fucking witnesses went to the power cutoff button, tried the help intercom, or went up to the ticket booths to have someone cut the power?

Go ahead and say he was drunk/homeless/crazy/whatthefuckever. The point still remains there's a goddamn body on the tracks and shit needs to be shut down.

You may not even remember it, but perhaps once or twice when you were a child out in public, a stranger might have raised an arm to prevent you from skipping off into a street. You wouldn't have even noticed, let alone remembered, and but for the grace of them you wouldn't be alive today. But one of the only remaining benefits of living in a society at all is so that we all look out for each other, at least a little. Otherwise we'd all might as well live alone in caves.

Its funny all the comments people are making but what if this was your son? or a close family member? I always find it funny how people can watch a video of someone losing their life and make stupid comments like "the train was late" or "no sparks" or say "nothing disturbing in this video" I mean what a bunch of retards.

As you said a real man can admit when he is wrong.

Thank you, he does seem to be having trouble admitting he was wrong.

Where were the New York City Transit Police? Horrible. Stay away from the tracks. Always. Sad.

No way can the police be at every track. There are 468 subway stations in NYC. Some stations have 2 tracks, some have 3, others have 4 tracks. The Times Square station's average weekday ridership in 2011 was 189,426 people. The average weekend had 224,823 riders. That's just the Times Square area.

It was 2 different issues. He was claiming there no emergency brakes accessible to passengers on the train. There is.

And every platform has a 3rd rail off switch, ON the platform. It apparently not well known, but it's there.

Nice try, but this is my post that you responded to.

Not ONE of those stupid fucking witnesses went to the power cutoff button, tried the help intercom, or went up to the ticket booths to have someone cut the power?

FUCKING IDIOTS.

Go ahead and say he was drunk/homeless/crazy/whatthefuckever. The point still remains there's a goddamn body on the tracks and shit needs to be shut down.

There's nothing I hate more than useless little shits who just stand around and scream.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1044523

I should have quoted the person who originally said it, but there is no "button" accessible to the public, you think they want every whack job down there shutting down rail lines? Use some common sense people.
