Yes, NYC is full of hoodlums, who do pull the emergency brake inside the train from time to time.

These brakes then have to be reset by the conductor or motorman.

Do you have any clue how metal conducts electricity? How the fuck do they "isolate" one section without it arcing to the next, herp derp!
 Quoting: 1nf1del

Each car has an emergency brake; if pulled, the entire train goes BIE (Brakes In Emergency), same as if the train passed a steady red signal.

Oh, here you go.

UPDATE: MTA spokesperson Charles Seaton writes, "These switches are located in areas that are NOT accessible to subway customers. They are not on the station platform." And they're not accessible to the token booth clerk, either. Seaton declined to elaborate on their exact location, for obvious reasons.

Did you get that? NOT accessible to subway customers! Very interesting, time to concede Kraut! You don't know shit!

Okay, you need to stop talking because you haven't gotten it right yet, power is constantly running through the third rail, what the hell do you think powers the train? The third rail is connected all over NYC, there is NO shut off "button" accessible to the public.
 Quoting: 1nf1del

Each and every subway station has at least one power cutoff button.

Here in Toronto, we have them at either end of the platforms, DWAs (fixed camera'd areas with direct cc and intercom to station management) every 40 feet or so. You slam the intercom button and yell "cut power, man on tracks" and they're trained to do so.

Yes, the subway system is hooked to the grid, but EACH INDIVIDUAL TRACK SECTION can be controlled. What, you don;t think these systems are computerized? They just draw juice and go? NoooOoOooo.

Also, OF COURSE they let just anyone hit the emergency shutoff buttons. They have them in the subway cars too, every 10 goddamn feet, and they're bright yellow. If you hit an emergency stop for ANYTHING but an emergency, they fine you and jail you. That's why every other jackass doesn't do it, because every other jackass would be in jail by now.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1044523

Go to fucking NYC, we are not talking about Toronto, NYC is chock-o-block full of hoodlums who don't give a shit, they jump turnstyles and run rampant in the subway, stick to what you know.
 Quoting: 1nf1del

WOW, you must really have your head up your ass if you don't know your own subway's safety features.

You have safety intercoms with direct link to a clerk, and train shutoff toggles on all of the subway cars. Each and every employee in a booth can cut the station track power, and I know this because there was a clerk who recently cut track power to keep a man from killing himself.

[link to www.mta.info]

MTA is also the sole authority over power cutoffs on the subway system.

I'm still trying to figure out if you have platform power cutoffs, because I can't find any info either way. Until I do, I maintain some jackass just has to run to the nearest intercom, slam the button, and state the emergency.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1044523

Guy this whole argument started because I simply stated the off switch for the third rail power IS NOT accessible to the public and I proved my point, end of discussion! Trains obviously have brakes, they obviously have emergency brakes, there is obviously a switch to turn off power to the third rail, this is all common sense that everybody who has ever rode on a subway knows, they arte not accessible to the public, at least not in NYC.

I've explained as best I can how most peoples non-reaction in traumatic situations goes.

As for the power off button on the platform, it IS only cut for a few minutes from that switch. It's not speculation. Permanent power has to be cut from a central location, on authority from Police, Fire, EMS, Transit Wokers, etc.

This individual was a homeless psycho, as many of them are, intermittently dangerous, psychotic, etc. Unpredictable.

"Who the fuck stumbles and trips into something on purpose"?

A psycho, which NYC is full of. Has been since they emptied out the insane asylums, decades ago. Now they give them some pills, and throw them back on the street.

Like I said; he made his decision, it's on him.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19122144

coming from a German hahaha, doesn't suprise me...we inherited all your psychos after ww2, but anyway so your saying..
A drunk man stumbles and falls
Bystanders stand and watch for several minutes, you know the smell had to be getting to them...yet no one initially cuts power, runs to get authority, or even calls out for help.
And the drunk guy is the psycho?
Riiiiiiight
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14239351

We don't know what byststanders did or didn't try to do, outside of the limited camera scope.

We don't know if he was drunk or on whatever drugs until a toxicology test is done.

We have already established that many people do not know where the off switch is on the platform.

And FYI, most Germans emigrated to the US long before WW2. Just sayin.

Well all I'm saying is...if I fall in a river, I hope someone with a little more compassion for human life is there..

If you're drowning I'm jumping in to get you. If you're being electrocuted and I don't see a button to cut off power then you are screwed. I wouldn't have gone down there either. He was toast the second he hit the tracks.
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

so the people on the platform had no ability to push the switch

which raises further questions

if the switch is not accessible, should it be?

even if the people on the platform actually couldn't have done anything, we have to learn from this at least.

PUT EMERGENCY CUT OFF IN REACH!

should it have been all along?

is this a health and safety issue on the railway part?

NEW YORK -- A New York City subway clerk thwarted a suicide attempt at his Manhattan station by cutting the power to the tracks as a train approached.

The 62-year-old agent said he tried to persuade the man to climb back up off the tracks, but had to act fast when he heard an announcement that a train was one station away.

Goodman found a power shutoff in the tunnel and threw the switch. Police and firefighters were on the scene shortly and took the distraught man to a hospital.

a system could be put in place, so that the platform section of the track is only live if a train is actually there.

easily done.

that would be a good idea, and undergound third rail that carries power, and a switch that activates the next section of track when the train passes over it, then disables power when the train passes.

Do Not Pull the Emergency Brake Cord

Use the emergency brake cord only when the motion of the subway presents an imminent danger to life and limb. Otherwise, do not activate the emergency brake cord, especially in a tunnel. Once the emergency brake cord is pulled, the brakes have to be reset before the train can move again, which reduces the options for dealing with the emergency

I feel bad for those who had to witness it

I have some theories:

1) Man was gay. - He had a group of nice women who were coaxing him and he did not respond.

2) Man was not gay. - He preferred to stay below and risk life and limb to keep his upskirt view of many women who oblivious of his sexy point of view.

3) Man knew he was going to die that day. - He deliberately went out, got drunk & high to celebrate his passover.

Questions:

Did the girl who was desperately trying to help this man realize that she would have received a more sever shck by touching him while he was laying on the third rail?

Did the train on that track stutter down the track as the man was draining votage out of the line?

Was anyone in the crowd thinking like me and wishing they had a 100 Watt lightbulb to put in the man's mouth as he lied convulsing?
