That would be fine if the people on the platform were in a subway car. There is no emergency brake cord on the platform.

Well, I draw two conclusions:

1.) Each NYC platform does have a power shutoff switch, most likely at the far end and probably slightly into the tunnel where the maintenance access is. Although it may be in a slightly "off limits" area, it is COMPLETELY physically accessible. The clerk himself, a 62-year-old man, had to be able to sprint down the platform, find it, and activate it, all before the train arrived from the next station.

This would imply that it is accessible to anyone from platform level.

2.) The NYC transit company MTA does not want people screwing with it, so they don't bother to announce the fact that they exist, which is a HUGE safety violation... because pretty much every other goddamn subway line in the 1st world has them clearly marked.

And every platform has a 3rd rail off switch, ON the platform. It apparently not well known, but it's there.

maybe they just too dumb to think of doing anything other than watching filming and wonder why SOMEONE ELSE isn't doing something.

if this happened in the uk, with the benefit of video to see what really happened, we would demand to know why the people there didnt do anythign to help. and charges would be brought against those who did nothing whilst able. even the tran companies safety would be questioned.

i guess its just that guy who didnt know what he was about to electrocute himself was unlucky enough to have people on the platform who didnt think of switching off the power when the guy was on the track, well at least one of them had the decency to film it.

There was a man or two there as well... just sayin'. I would have done it, and have done similar things in similar situations. I've also had a stranger save my life from a freak accident, who could have otherwise just kept walking.

You may not even remember it, but perhaps once or twice when you were a child out in public, a stranger might have raised an arm to prevent you from skipping off into a street. You wouldn't have even noticed, let alone remembered, and but for the grace of them you wouldn't be alive today. But one of the only remaining benefits of living in a society at all is so that we all look out for each other, at least a little. Otherwise we'd all might as well live alone in caves.

they were asking what would happen if they went down there, and didnt realise he was dead as soon as he lay down.

the point they actually panic is when they can smell the burning and the panic is because they dont like the smell.

Im tired of hearing this. "Oh, what if it was your mom, or dad, or whatever". That's nothing but bullshit. My family members might be drinkers but they wouldnt be out in PUBLIC all wasted. No way can the police be at every track. There are 468 subway stations in NYC. Some stations have 2 tracks, some have 3, others have 4 tracks. The Times Square station's average weekday ridership in 2011 was 189,426 people. The average weekend had 224,823 riders. That's just the Times Square area.
