Only 25 percent of new COLLEGE grads are proficiently literate Key words=RAISE CHILDREN Most children are not being raised by parents per se that responsibility has been placed on their teachers! You are very right that the love of learning must be instilled. However, parents are the first teachers. If that does not happen which it often does not(parents are working 3 jobs) then by the 4th grade all the material to be covered becomes overwhelming! Kindergarten teachers are struggling because many incoming students were not taught anything from their parents! Things that should have been taught from birth. Learning must occur both in the home and in the school. If learning is seen as in-school activity only then there is no way an entire classroom of 30-35-40 students can ALL absorb the enormous material. Your child is a special needs student and in my state special needs children receive more attention and more funding. Those who fall in the middle of the bell curve must sink or swim. Actually, those who fall in the 80th percentile if they are not removed to a gifted school tend to fall to lower levels alongside of their peers. If you continue this pattern into high school then yes you will see entering Freshmen who lack basic skills. The problem is multi-faceted but if you want to get to the root let's not look at the schools but the homes. |

Many graduates get through with top notch grades without having learned much of anything. College isn't about learning, it's about getting a special piece of paper so you can get a jorb and make money. End of story. |

Only 25 percent of new COLLEGE grads are proficiently literate I blame three main reasons for the decline of proficient reading, writing and comprehension standards: 1 - National Education Association for their decades-long efforts to dumb-down children. 2 - Media promotion and popularization of celebrities and the sad public emulation of the celebrities' behaviors, talks, and styles. Listen to too many badly written or poorly conceived songs by singers of different music themes, too. 3 - Emulation of hip-hop and black culture language. More young people of non-African American backgrounds (white, Hispanic, Asian, etc) are emulating the languages of the black Americans, yah know whatyam sayin'? Just watch some MTV shows like "Next" or "The Real World" and you have a pretty good idea of young people with bad reading, writing and comprehension standards they've learned in schools or colleges. |

We have children on both sides of that coin and that is so true. Sad, isn't it? Two other things that stand out as part of the problem: 1.) Teachers that do NOT know how to TEACH, AND who are also illiterate themselves. I am so appalled at the letters we receive from the faculty at our kids' school. The grammar is unbelievably BAD. My mother, who taught for 25 years and is now an administrator, will be the first to tell you just how bad the system is now. She really feels somewhat betrayed by her profession, and this really started years ago: I remember when she was working on her Masters (when I was in high school, 20 years ago) and she was appalled THEN at the level of illiteracy of her peers who were taking the same classes as she was. She felt that her degree really didn't mean much at all. Now she's an administrator for a large school system, and she often shares emails and/or memos from the superintendent with us. You wouldn't believe how bad the grammar is in those - and yet we wonder why our schools are failing. She has decided to write a grant in hopes to start a 'cottage' type school for her (very near) 'retirement' years. I think she is doing this mainly to help save her younger grandchildren :) 2.) Teachers now 'teach the test' instead of teaching the skills. In addition to that, the few teachers that ARE good, and who don't succumb to this insanity are not only NOT rewarded, but often 'punished'. We witnessed this recently at my daughter's school. She has an Algebra teacher who is a gem: My daughter, unlike my oldest son who is academically gifted, is more of a slightly (just slightly) above average student - but she really has to work. She's always struggled a bit in math (unlike English, however, where she shines, as do all of my children). This lady is the first teacher to really 'get through' to her – I actually caught my daughter ‘teaching’ my youngest son square roots the other day  Anyway, this lady was yelled at – in front of the kids – by the principal (about two weeks ago). Why? Her students’ grades (on average) weren’t as ‘high’ as some of the other teachers. Yet we know for a fact (having had some of the other teachers) that this lady is a much better teacher who is not artificially inflating the grades or teaching only ‘test skills’ instead of Algebra skills. This lady left in the middle of the day crying. My daughter was very upset, because she feels this lady is the best teacher she’s ever had, and she had to witness this and now there’s also a bit of innocence lost – and she realizes it (she’s 15, almost 16). Our education system is so screwed up. We’ve had our kids in public and private school and really didn’t see much difference, either. I don’t ‘officially’ home school, because I still believe that the social skills learned in a group setting (along with extra curricular activities like band, cheer, soccer, etc.) are important. However, we do ‘home-school’ in the sense that we often re-teach material to our kids after school, because the teachers didn’t do a good job of that during the day. I can’t tell you how many times my kids have come home with ‘read pages 1-15 and do problems 1-36 on page 16’ and that was the sole attempt to teach the skill. Many times teachers will assign a task such as this, and then spend the next 45 minutes of class time doing NOTHING – just letting the kids ‘do their work’ with no intervention or actual ‘teaching’ going on at all. It’s almost like distance learning to some extent. So we, the parents, end up teaching the material to our kids when they get home – which is fine, and I’m happy to do it, but sort of irks me that the teachers - generally speaking, not all of them – are not. Sorry for the long post. This is a topic for which I am VERY passionate! I will accept any rules that you feel necessary to your freedom. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do. ~ Robert Heinlein |

Only 25 percent of new COLLEGE grads are proficiently literate Here's the truth about college and society in modern america, most don't want to hear it but its the truth: Its falling apart. We are letting women run the show and its hurting us. We are outsourcing our tech jobs because we only graduate women's studies, philosophy and communications majors now because women don't like math and science, engineering. 60 percent of graduates are now women. MOST of these will work in the workforce for maybe 3 or 4 years then they will drop out, raise kids and maybe part time it. China and India are killing us in the tech sector and our countries industrial base is being driven away by female friendly workplace policies like HR, sexual harassment, FMLA laws and affirmative action. We are handing degrees out like candy to primarily women who are then not using that in the workforce but dropping out to have kids and be a SUV driving koffee klatsching soccer mom who will in 8 out of 10 divorces be the one to take the kids and house away from a hard working man which also affect productivity of the one gender who is actually doing anything for the GDP. Were fucked. No matter how good women have it, they are never happy. True story: friends wife, multimillionaire, lives in the best house in the whole town, totally on anti-depressants and cheating on her husband. There is a reason older generations kept women in check. Just like forbidden knowledge of wiser past generations, we have forgotten. We are so fucked. |

Only 25 percent of new COLLEGE grads are proficiently literate Do you really think that many college grads are hanging out here? Idiot college grads can't read or write! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33802Finally, there's solid proof that today's college graduates are morons. According to a shocking new federal report, just 25 percent of new grads are proficiently literate. That means three-quarters of this country's university students are sent off with little more than basic skills in reading, writing and comprehension. It's hardly better for the "smarties" who go on to graduate school: Just 31 percent of tomorrow's doctors, lawyers and PhDs can competently deal with the English language. "Scores fell from 1992 to 2003 for virtually every educational level, and the declines were steepest, by and large, the further up the ladder one moved," the online magazine Inside Higher Ed reported. The National Assessment of Adult Literacy tested 19,000 Americans in 2003 -- the first nationwide study of America's literacy rates since 1992. As an increasing percentage of Americans earn college degrees, more of them are leaving with diplomas they can barely read. A university degree was a rarity in the United States as recently as the 1940 -- only 10 percent of Americans had even gone to college and 75 percent hadn't even finished high school. And those lucky or privileged enough to attend university actually left school with real knowledge and skills. Today, nearly a quarter of Americans have a university degree by the time they're 25, and these college-educated dummies are confused by nearly everything they read. The new graduates are so stupid that federal researchers were forced to drop "advanced" literacy from the results, downgrading the top performers to a "proficient" level of literacy. Successfully comparing different viewpoints in newspaper editorials or being able to figure out an instruction manual -- actual tests used to compute the highest levels of American literacy -- aren't exactly "advanced" skills.
