Why the Bad Spelling and Grammar on GLP? Only 25 percent of new COLLEGE grads are proficiently literate
Idiot college grads can't read or write!

Finally, there's solid proof that today's college graduates are morons.

According to a shocking new federal report, just 25 percent of new grads are proficiently literate. That means three-quarters of this country's university students are sent off with little more than basic skills in reading, writing and comprehension.

It's hardly better for the "smarties" who go on to graduate school: Just 31 percent of tomorrow's doctors, lawyers and PhDs can competently deal with the English language.

"Scores fell from 1992 to 2003 for virtually every educational level, and the declines were steepest, by and large, the further up the ladder one moved," the online magazine Inside Higher Ed reported.

The National Assessment of Adult Literacy tested 19,000 Americans in 2003 -- the first nationwide study of America's literacy rates since 1992. As an increasing percentage of Americans earn college degrees, more of them are leaving with diplomas they can barely read.

A university degree was a rarity in the United States as recently as the 1940 -- only 10 percent of Americans had even gone to college and 75 percent hadn't even finished high school. And those lucky or privileged enough to attend university actually left school with real knowledge and skills.

Today, nearly a quarter of Americans have a university degree by the time they're 25, and these college-educated dummies are confused by nearly everything they read.

The new graduates are so stupid that federal researchers were forced to drop "advanced" literacy from the results, downgrading the top performers to a "proficient" level of literacy. Successfully comparing different viewpoints in newspaper editorials or being able to figure out an instruction manual -- actual tests used to compute the highest levels of American literacy -- aren't exactly "advanced" skills.

I was watching the news the other day and they were talking about how adult English proficiency has dropped significantly since the 50's, but working with math has risen significantly (such as tax returns).

Re: Why the Bad Spelling and Grammar on GLP? Only 25 percent of new COLLEGE grads are proficiently literate
The idiot college grads, huh. Just them? Well what do you expect of us idiots? Don't blame us. Blame the real idiots in the admissions offices for accepting us true idiots in the first place and then blame the idiot instructors for passing us and then blame the idiot deans for giving us degrees. That is, unless we idiots are classified by the government as an entitled minority. In that case, the measure of reading and writing English is relative to the skill level of American who's reading and writing, us idiots or geniuses. One's as good as the other, but we idiots are to get the jobs and promotions first.

Elija, it isn't the spelling or typos they are talking about here. It's the proper (ie standard) usage of the language. Keeping to a standard means that we are all actually using the SAME language....which is comes in rather handy now 'n' then.

Re: Why the Bad Spelling and Grammar on GLP? Only 25 percent of new COLLEGE grads are proficiently literate
In my state, spelling and grammar was put on the back burner. All of the 3 R's...have you seen the curriculum for 4th grade? It is so back with bull that it is impossible to cover the material. Wait! Let me rephrase that....it is impossible for students to actually absorb all the material because it all has to be covered no matter what!

If you get it the first time around great! If you didn't sorry...there is no time to reinstruct maybe next year. Hopefully, someone at home taufht you everything we couldn't cover that you really need because we must teach what the tell us to...not what we know you need!

Dumbing Down...down...down.

It has nothing at all to do with any political organization. People are lazy and don't care about bettering themselves nearly as much as they care about keeping themselves entertained and instantly gratified. Their failure to improve themselves rests squarely upon their own slouching shoulders. The anti-intellectualism of America is well underway because the masses are asses.

Nonsense. My special needs child, who is in the third grade, was picking out idioms today from Bugs Bunny's dialogue while watching tv. You either raise children to love learning or not. It really is that simple.
