"By using the ultra hi-res microscope we were able to concentrate the image down to a smaller area than has been achieved before, creating a darker image which is easier to see", Professor Kielpinski said.

The precision involved in this process is almost beyond imagining.

i know i'll get shot down in flames, but i can knock up shit like that in paint in 5 minutes

not saying this isn't true, and that isn't a real image. i'm sure it is.

i am saying, sometimes, they need, erm, filler material, ya know?

'tell you what guys, see this doodle i just did during lunch, let's tell the stupid fucks it's a pic of an atom, and see if they fall for it!'

ok shoot me down now, as if i give a fuck. chuckle

by the way, did you notice it took the TEAM, yes the TEAM 5 years to get that?

that's some juicy funding going on there.

year 1 - 'got the picture yet?' 'not yet boss, but I'm convinced we'll get it next year'

year 4 - 'look now, you lot are taking the fucking piss!'

One of the most interesting things I've read in a while though...an atom needs how much light to cast a shadow....would that be part of a part of one photon?

I can't believe that the person who wrote the article didn't care to ask or mention what element the atom was.

Professor Kielpinski and his colleagues trapped single atomic ions of the element ytterbium and exposed them to a specific frequency of light.

Re: First photo of shadow of single atom
I find the whole thing a bit suspicious because I thought the limit of resolution had more to do with the size of a wavelength of visible light. Supposedly the size of a wavelength of visible light is much larger than an atom.

I notice the reporter also did not go into exactly what type of light was used.

"If we change the frequency of the light we shine on the atom by just one part in a billion, the image can no longer be seen," Professor Kielpinski said.

Something doesn't seem right about that.

I thought that strange as well.

Perhaps it is the frequency of the light canceling out the shadow...er something?

EDIT, ah, I see you said something similar. ie, What type of light was used.

BUMP for people who obviously did not read the article.

What I find amazing about the image is that nature once again uses a basic shape and repeats it on various levels.....atoms, sea shells, swirling water, the cosmos. It only confirms what I have read about the universe being one great hologram with the smaller organisms incorporating the larger universe.

Re: First photo of shadow of single atom
And if you believe in the timewave zero calculations this from the following thread:

Re: Timewave Zero and Novelty Theory -- WHAT IS IT?????
Well ... Terence McKenna developed a computer model of time ... said that nature loves novelty ... novelty happens at specific times in history ... his computer model pinpoints all the times in history when some type of abrupt change happened ... and based on the model it can predict what is going to happen in time. I believe it is based on the I Ching. It all points to 2012, when he says this "Attractor" is pulling us toward itself ...

Also time twists in tighter and tighter spirals. We revisit historic events and as time spirals the time between events shortens ... and we are nearing the tightest point of the spiral of this timeframe ...

From what I remember he came up with 2012 independently from the Mayan calendar or any other thing that has pointed to that year. These things were not so out in the open at the time he came up with his model.
