Well that's not that easy to answer.

60's,70's era or modern?

The ultimate early muscle car would have been the 1969 Corvette ZL-1...

because not only was it outrageously fast, it handled extremely well because the engine had an aluminum block and heads.

Unfortunately only 2 were ordered and produced, but it does qualify as a standard production car.

Modern would be the 2009 Corvette ZR-1, 205mph top speed in an extremely well balanced machine at a reasonable price.

Most of the muscle cars were cool though.

Personally I had:

1969 GTO convertible.

1970 Chevelle SS 454 an L46 if I remember correctly.

1971 Mustang Mach I with the 351 Cleveland engine.

They were a lot of fun and I wish I still had all three.

The Shelby Cobra doesn't count. It's like comparing the Ford GT. Just so much race care there, no tuned down versions. (yes, I'm envious! I'd love to own one!)

The Charger was suppose to be the best but the car became faulty. But it had all the horsepower....

The dream, the one, the muscle car dream of all muscle cars that ever existed was indeed the 69' Shelby.....
