When should I start taking potassium iodide? Whats really happening with Fukushima and etc?

I have read a few things in the last 4 days stating that we had a complete collapse of #4. I can not seem to verify this in anyway.
I don't know if its safe to take potassium iodide daily like a vitamin or if only safe when fighting off higher radiation levels.
I just want to make sure my friends and family are safe and I do not know when to start getting them to take things like that.
I feel like we have 1000 things that are at the verge of collapse and that we could have some real problems facing us the second half of 2012 and I just dont know if I should be acting proactively now or just wait patiently.
Any advice?
Anyone else struggling with decisions like these?
Quoting: jonk754 take it if you want, i guess..... you take it for a certain amount of time and then stop....for at least a while.... i think the point is just to flood your thryoid so there is no place for radiation...but i could be wrong.
