i'm reading in other threads about birds dying, and i want to ask GLP'ers to do one tiny thing.

please, it is a simple thing that can help and/or save them.

PUT WATER OUT! please try to put the water in the shade and give it enough space from home that the wild ones feel comfortable.
 Quoting: Anne O'Mally

I have a bird bath, but sometimes I place a small shallow bowl of water on my front porch and watch the multitudes of finches try to fit in it to bathe. It's funny.
However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task
the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. Acts 20:24

"This man really is the Savior of the world!" John 4:42

Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him;
and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.
I am the Alpha and the Omega, " says the Lord God, who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." Revelation 1:7

And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it." Amen.

yeah, you're right. but hell, why not just start throwing seeds everywhere? guerrilla gardening is seeming more and more like a good idea. people could start coming together and making a community garden. start employing anyone who wants to work. make a new economy, a new society, even. why not dream big?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18388824

it's a wonderful dream and many are doing just that. check out what is going on in detroit, and how well it is working...they have THE BEST farmers market in the country:

Thread: Does Detroit Have the Answer to the Coming Economic Failure?

one problem: people who do not work the gardens stealing the food. where i live, EVERYONE has a garden, so much less of an issue unless it's a total apocalypse scenario.

oh also, if you look at the map i posted, and connect the el nino coming, you can guess that should this continue for a few years, all is lost...i believe gardeners have the absolute upper hand.

i'm in a good place but i know a lot of people are not. if you truly want to make a go of it, go to a community in detroit & where the big garden movements are going on.

Love to you, Anne. You're a wonderful person.

Freese ice blocks in orange juice cartons. Pop them out in shallow containers. They'll melt slowly and provide cold water for hours.

I bought 3 angel food cake pans at a thrift store. I drove a stake down inside the tube part so they don't tip over. The little birds land on the rim of the pans and drink their fill.

Don't forget food. Rye bread and other high calorie items. They need salt, so buy the salted sunflower seeds.

Hey! Bird haters, without the birds, certain species of plants would be extinct.

I have a Flexible Flyer Wagon with water in it. Need to add more. Plus some birdfood. Your idea with the orange juice cartons is awesome. I like the angel food cake idea too.

Great thread OP! This is important to offer wildlife relief however you can.

Yes to the birdbath!

I blast out old water replacing with clean water every day (so they don't pass along bird diseases). It gets rank pretty fast.

Then around 5 pm if it's really hot I'll turn the sprinkler on low so the water goes out only 3 1/2 ft or so.
They like to stand under it and fluff their wings...the bigger birds tend to hog the birdbath.
cheers

they're the kind that have the white crescents on their wings when spread out. super cool.

I'm in an urban area, but one that has unmetered water usage, so I pay a flat fee and can use all the water I want. And my city is encouraging residents now to use that ability to water trees, shrubs, everything, and I am doing so. I've had my hose on constantly for more than 10 days now. Earlier today I was moving the hose from one tree to another and I saw, like, hundreds of wasps and yellowjackets thirstily slurping the water droplets on the apple tree I had just watered. They were deathly thirsty. Seeing as they pollinate the plants that produce otherwise expensive food for me, I felt good seeing them taking advantage of the water availability. I think every pollinator in my neighborhood is coming to my yard for water now.

do you live in an area wherein there aren't rivers/creeks and streams nearby?

that's a great idea if that's the case, surely they'd appreciate it.

I used to keep water in the yard just for the deer, but then they traverse back and forth to the river daily anyway so they got a lot more out of my hedge of tomato plants than they did the water or the salt block I put out.

they do love to lay in my field tho, especially before it's been mowed in the spring, altho they actually prefer the yard as they love to lay in the shade underneath my lilac bush whereby they can reach up and nibble on the leaves without having to get up.

they go nuts for the tomato plants tho, you couldn't chase them away from those, they have no fear when it comes to tomatos it seems.

lol

if you bothered they'd just run around the house and be back at it by the time you rounded the corner.

we had two huge bucks here last night laying in the shade, heavy racks, both in velvet.

normally there is a small herd of around ten of them, a mix of does and bucks with their fawns. they gather here in the evening en route from the river to my west back to the orchards to my east where they bed down.

It’s hardly evident that a dog is man’s best friend, considering many are left to their own devices to try to survive in this deadly heat wave.

“I have received many phone calls about dozens of dogs dying daily during the last two weeks,” said Pam Porteous, the Animal Care Network manager in Pontiac.

The animal care staff recently went to homes in four Pontiac blocks and found “83 dogs and puppies” in the heat without sufficient water or food.

“It’s horrible,” Porteous said.

Just finished putting out "banana goop" and made a mud pie.

Re: Banana goop. Don't throw away ripe banana's. Peel them and place them inside a plastic bag. Smash them, but leave a few chunks. Scoop out the banana's and smear them on the trunk of a tree. You will not believe the butterflies, bees and hummingbirds that will flock to this delicious and easily digested "nectar." Sure, the ants will come, but they clean up after the other creatures.

Re: Mud pie. Scoop up a mound of soil and wet it. Spread it out like a pie. Butterflies love a wet mud pie on a hot day. You might want to do this at the far corner of the yard. You can also do it with sand. Just keep it moist, and the little creatures will land and cool "their jets" before take off.

Thanks to everyone who has given them water, food and a safe place to hide from predators.

Not much you can do about the birds. I seen a hawk in the trees this morning and it was 90 degrees F at 8.00 AM . It wasn't looking for water or prey, just had its mouth open trying to breathe.

If you can dig a hole a third of the way up the bucket, then set the bucket in the hole, it's not likely a coon would tip it. If you dig the hole half way up the bucket, it's extremely unlikely anything would tip it.

Those little kiddie pools work nice too.

Farmers focus on cooling cattle during heat wave
11:06 PM, Jul 5, 2012

On the hottest days the black and white cows stand panting with their tongues hanging out, and though the temperature seemed to be cooler Thursday, owner Dennis Landwehr said the heat has still taken its toll....

Feed intake at Landwehr Dairy has dropped about 16 percent this week alone. Though they haven’t noticed an immediate effect, Landwehr said the decrease will impact the dairy’s productivity.

“For every pound of feed lost, a pound and a half of milk is lost,” he said.

When there are four consecutive days of extreme heat, workers at Landwehr Dairy start to worry about the animals’ well-being. Herd manager Isaac Miller said a program is in place to cope with the temperature.

Those are great ideas. Butterflies love one of those nylon dish scrubbers (untreated with no cleaning product in them) placed in a dish of sugar water. They can sit on the scrubber and get their drink through the open areas of the scrubber.

Anyone ever use a clay pot turned upside down with a chunk broken on the side? If you soak the pot, wet the ground and put the pot upside down, frogs will find a nice cool, moist home and show their gratitude by eating your pesky insects.
