Question for preppers- do you bury things?

Okay so I saw "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" a few days ago and was thinking "What if there was a big asteroid impact and all the houses and trees burned to a crisp but somehow, with the aid of a wet wool fire blanket, I managed to survive? Wouldn't it be cool if I had containers of food, clothes, seed, utensils, etc. buried in my yard and I could just dig them up and start over?"

Has anyone here experimented with burying things they might need? If so, what kind of containers have you verified that really are water-tight?
