I understand that you should save money, but we are all going to die one day.

Some people on their death bed lived full adventure filled lives, others die in a great big house with money in the bank.

What's better?

I know it's best to have a bunch of money and travel but most people dont have the funds for this.

We each have our own path in this world. Some people need to go out and travel, and some people need to stay home. Do whatever you need to do.

Ask retired people who are confined to a 'home'...they'll tell you ;-)

Do what gives you joy. Traveling may seem the obvious choice, however, some people get joy from knowing they'll be taken care of later in life.

You can probably find a middle point here without going to either extreme

Pfft... people don't travel to have adventurous lives, they travel to brag about it to their friends.

In this age of internet, you can do both. Travel and make money at the same time. Google it and you'll find plenty of resources. A guy makes around $32,000 a year traveling all over the world and taking pics. So find something like that.

I would opt for the travel and adventure. At least I will have fond memories and nice things to look back on while I'm sitting in FEMA camp.

Re: Is it better to travel and live a fulfilled life of adventure, or is better to sit and home and save money for retirement?
A buddy of mine in his 40's has traveled all over the world, has played golf at all these awesome golf courses (he loves golf), and has had numerous adventures.

A lot of my friends in their 40's have a bank full of money but have never done shit. They have worked away their entire youth-seems like a waste of the good years.

I would much rather travel when I am younger and have some energy left and can do things. Traveling when I am 70 and not being able to do anything physical does not seem like too much fun.

Travel because you never know when retirement is going to come. One is better off living an adventurous life while they have the ability to still move around and try new things.

Unfortunately for me, I have realized too late that I should have lived life, now I am too old to enjoy much more that a nice sunset.

As for the retirement money, the rape of the 401k's and exploding tax has robbed me of my nest egg.

I am left with the broken shell of a nest egg and I am a broken shell of who I once was..

Re: Is it better to travel and live a fulfilled life of adventure, or is better to sit and home and save money for retirement?
I decided to travel first. I met people, retired people, who were travelling in the same places I was. Mainly Latin American countries. I was in my twenties then and living in those places. These people always made a point to tell me the same thing. "Don't question what you are doing even when times are tough, because if I had it to do over again, knowing what I know now, I would not have worked all my life for retirement. Now I have the money, but I don't have the youth to enjoy it like you are. Life is to be lived and enjoyed. Don't waste the best years of your life working for the man just because that's what they say you should do. There is time for work and money, but you never get your youth back. It could all be over tomorrow. or not. The important thing is to live and get out there and enrich your life through experience. You can never study for these things."

Alot of older people that I met told me this or some variation of this.

People have asked me, well what about your retirement? and Social Security? My reply was always the same. When I'm old enough to retire, Social Security will be broke and the systems that we have now will not exist anymore. That was twenty years ago...and I still have quite a few years left to retirement age. My answer hasn't changed.

See the world, you won't regret it. And believe me, when you take the steps to put yourself into situations that are risky and may seem crazy to others, universe looks out for you and opportunities always present themselves just when you need them the most. Alot of faith helps.

Re: Is it better to travel and live a fulfilled life of adventure, or is better to sit and home and save money for retirement?
Yes, cash helps. But, if you wait around until you have "enough" cash, it will never happen. You just have to do it. I took off with $800, a backpack and went directly to a place where alot of foreigners had relocated to and owned alot of restaurants and bars. I wouldn't recommend anyone to be as drastic as I was so I would say about 3 times that amount should make things comfortable for you. I got a job immediately making enough cash to cover daily expenses. There were alot of people doing the same thing so there was always a network of rooms to rent, places to stay, etc. If you have never lived in an ex pat community, you would be amazed at the amount of people willing to help someone who had the balls to get out to get on their feet.

Enough cash in the bank to not worry for about 6 months is enough. Give it that long. In six months if you try and things havn't worked out for you, you either did it wrong and blew your money on beer or just didn't want it bad enough.

Whatever place you desire to visit, you already lived in that area in a previous life.

People in this day and age travel to make themselves look like they have a life and have superior social skills.

The stupid thing is, they can only compare to those that have done nothing of the sort.

Get 2 well travelled idiots bragging about where they been, and it will turn into a competition about who's had a more adventurous life.

I have done it and I'm still doing it. You don't need lots of money, only a little bit. You can even take odd jobs while traveling. Why don't you use your imagination for once? No wonder you're stuck in life.

I am not living a fantasy, this is real life for me and I'm enjoying it. I work, I travel. I am 32 years old and have stories and anecdotes that you probably cannot even imagine.

I am in a stable relationship, I have many friends and I visit my parents (who are still together) every week when I'm not traveling. I'm just stating this because I know this forum. You weirdo's think people who are non-conformists are deranged and unstable.

Live a little. Go out and explore. Stop worrying about everything. You people worry too much about war and disease and armageddon. So pathetic and useless. Life is passing you by and I am taking it ALL!

For those who are waiting until they are retired, don't bother. You can only travel when you are young. When you are old, you take a vacation. This thread is not about taking a vacation, it's about exploring and adventuring.

Big differene between travelling and taking a vacation. To get the feel for a place you need to stay there for a while and go local. Meet the people. Live the life of the place. I know so many people where I live now that go to amazing places every year. The people here go all over the world. Every August, for 2 weeks. Then it's right back to the office and the routine. And a month later, the vacation is just a faded memory and pictures on the camera waiting to be uploaded to the PC. It's not the same thing as staying several months in a place and relaxing into the lifestyle.

Live your life and hope you die young. My father worked his life away and thanks to Uncle Sam he wont have ANY social security and what he has saved isn't enough.

I wish you would at least register so I could give you Karma. *Hugs* I know you were doing what you thought was right and so many others have done this too-like my grandma. We told her to spend her money and she had like 1/2 a million. She wouldn't spend it, but hoarded it and now she has only enough left to keep her in the nursing home for 2 more years at 5000.00 per month. She lays in bed and hardly moves at all. Wish she had spent it traveling and going and doing instead of sitting around the house and worrying about her money. It's too late now, though and I can't go see her cause she's not very happy and it just upsets me and I can't do anything about it because it's between her and her daughter who is angry with her. So, I stay out of it.

Don't give up totally, BB. You can still post on glp, so that's more than my grandma can do. Maybe there is more you can do than you give yourself credit for. Giving up is at least partially in the mind. Please don't stop trying to live.

Had the opportunities throughout my life for both. Military, college, vagabonding, career, retirement wealth, lost retirement wealth... rich-poor-rich-poor-rich-poor-fuckit...

I live a 'simple' modest lifestyle today, doing what I love to do the most. I'll never be wealthy again, and frankly don't care. It's highly unlikely I'll ever see "Social Security" (I will be 'of age' about the same time it's estimated to be broke), but I've always paid my own way, and expect to always have to. The idea of 'retirement' doesn't even cross my mind.

Wealth can come and go, but the memories of places that I've seen and wide variety of adventures that I've experienced (mostly while penniless) can never be replaced or erased.

Go see the world. Meet the rest of humanity. Live an interesting life. Fall in love. Get into a fight. Volunteer to help the less fortunate. Do good deeds and always be honorable and compassionate.

You are awesome! Now go fucking act like it.
