Is it better to travel and live a fulfilled life of adventure, or is better to sit and home and save money for retirement?

I understand that you should save money, but we are all going to die one day.

Some people on their death bed lived full adventure filled lives, others die in a great big house with money in the bank.

What's better?

I know it's best to have a bunch of money and travel but most people dont have the funds for this.

Travel, like you said you cannot take it with you. I am actually getting ready to do this. Sell my home I have enough equity its worth it, plus my small savings on ya its travel time. I have a travel trailer for when the travel fun is over and land to park it on. have fun enjoy your one life.

Life is a summation of experience... the more you experience the entire planet... the more you have lived...

Age and years mean nothing, everyone lives one life-time.

Yeah, I'm going to do it. I've been trying to keep up with the Jone's for a long time and I am not a happy person for it. The things that seem to make most people happy, do not make me happy.

I'm going to go out on a limb and take a risk and see where it leads me.

I will continue to work as long as I can remember how to get there. The day I have to retire, is the day I "off" myself. I say, spend it now! If you Waite on this corrupt system we are slaves to, it may not be there for you even tomorrow!

Whatever suits you best. I've pretty much done as I wanted and gone where I wanted to, but now I'm looking at retirement without much in the bank. On the one hand, I have faith I'll get by, but on the other hand I'm envious of my sister who has lived fairly frugally and saved for a very comfortable retirement. It's just a choice.

Unfortunately for me, I have realized too late that I should have lived life, now I am too old to enjoy much more that a nice sunset.

As for the retirement money, the rape of the 401k's and exploding tax has robbed me of my nest egg.

I am left with the broken shell of a nest egg and I am a broken shell of who I once was..

just call me broke and bored.. BB for short

See the world, you won't regret it. And believe me, when you take the steps to put yourself into situations that are risky and may seem crazy to others, universe looks out for you and opportunities always present themselves just when you need them the most. Alot of faith helps.

Hmm, cash helps, too.

I have NO IDEA how these people manage to just take off and travel and live this fantasy lifestyle.

My buddy has a good job-he just spends all of the money on trips and such. He lives in a tiny cheap house and drives an older cheap car. Most of his friends live in gigantic 4000 square feet houses and drive expensive cars.

Yup. It's called priorities. Your friend would rather travel than inhabit status symbols. Can't say I blame him!

It's hard choice. I love to travel. But I ALWAYS get pissed when I'm travelling because I feel like I'm being ripped off. I recently spent the night in Sydney with my children, because I wanted to take them to the museums. I stayed at the Westin. Because my kids are young I ordered room service. I didn't realise to order them hot chocolate was $9 per cup (for just cocoa), and then a $8 delivery fee. It's a small thing, but it pissed me off. All up, the accommodation cost about $1000 for one night. And it was a shitty little room.

The last time I spent about that much was at the Four Seasons at the Rocks. Better hotel, better location, better view. And they gave the kids a present on arrival.

Both!
Get a trade.
Live below your means.
Save/invest for retirement.
Travel the world while you're young.

Do as I say.
Do as I do/did.

I traveled the world in my youth. The only place left to go is Easter Island which I'm doing this August.
I'm retiring this October with a whole bunch o' money & gold to keep me going until the end.

Now I travel business class using miles earned on my credit card. I buy everything on that card.

Its an awesome perk. It also makes business and first class travel affordable. Like you mentioned, there are ways of travelling cheaply. It's about working smarter, not harder.

You could also save your money and then do your traveling after you are retired.

nawwwww
think of it this way, traveling young means you get to think about it more before your dead, in case you live.

A buddy of mine in his 40's has traveled all over the world, has played golf at all these awesome golf courses (he loves golf), and has had numerous adventures.

A lot of my friends in their 40's have a bank full of money but have never done shit. They have worked away their entire youth-seems like a waste of the good years.

I would much rather travel when I am younger and have some energy left and can do things. Traveling when I am 70 and not being able to do anything physical does not seem like too much fun.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2364968

not everybody even at 40yo can travel over the world and play golf.

he was surely in the 1%.

An affordable balance is likely best, but for me it is travel. I was ziplining over a rainforest in Antigua a week ago -- will be a fond memory when I am on my death bed; if I had not ziplined the rainforest, it would be a regret.

I wish you would at least register so I could give you Karma. *Hugs* I know you were doing what you thought was right and so many others have done this too-like my grandma. We told her to spend her money and she had like 1/2 a million. She wouldn't spend it, but hoarded it and now she has only enough left to keep her in the nursing home for 2 more years at 5000.00 per month. She lays in bed and hardly moves at all. Wish she had spent it traveling and going and doing instead of sitting around the house and worrying about her money. It's too late now, though and I can't go see her cause she's not very happy and it just upsets me and I can't do anything about it because it's between her and her daughter who is angry with her. So, I stay out of it.

Don't give up totally, BB. You can still post on glp, so that's more than my grandma can do. Maybe there is more you can do than you give yourself credit for. Giving up is at least partially in the mind. Please don't stop trying to live.

if you're not living, your dying. when you "say sit at home and save up" do you mean literally doing nothing more than going to work and watching tv? cause thats a pretty pointless life

You are correct. I'm retired now, and mostly broke, but I have a few memories.
A guy I worked with, a miser, drove an old car, wore shirts with holes in the elbows and ate a can of corn or tuna for lunch and has at least 3/4 million in walmart stock, but he won't spend a penny. He lives alone in an old delapidated house by himself and watches football. He won't retire until they make him.

I had zero desire to travel when I was in my 20s. History and other places bored me. I was busy exploring myself and my place ... traveling around the U.S. by car and having adventures right here at home. Learning guitar, playing with other people, learning carpentry and building things, gardening, trying to build brick barbeque in the back yard (major failure), enjoying my cats. I also slouched off for most of my 20s -- series of odd jobs, living cheap.

Then at about 28 I'd had enough f'ing around and decided to go to grad school. Found my path and have been working like a crazed person ever since. As a working person my job has sent me to England, Austria, Holland. I could go to asia if I wanted to but it doesn't interest me. And I've earned enough to pay for family trips to Mexico, Italy, and back to England.

I have absolutely NO regrets about how I've lived my life. I've taken care of myself so when I return at 66 I fully expect to still enjoy traveling as much or more than I would've in my 20s.
