I understand that you should save money, but we are all going to die one day.

Some people on their death bed lived full adventure filled lives, others die in a great big house with money in the bank.

What's better?

I know it's best to have a bunch of money and travel but most people dont have the funds for this.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2364968

I had zero desire to travel when I was in my 20s. History and other places bored me. I was busy exploring myself and my place ... traveling around the U.S. by car and having adventures right here at home. Learning guitar, playing with other people, learning carpentry and building things, gardening, trying to build brick barbeque in the back yard (major failure), enjoying my cats. I also slouched off for most of my 20s -- series of odd jobs, living cheap.

Then at about 28 I'd had enough f'ing around and decided to go to grad school. Found my path and have been working like a crazed person ever since. As a working person my job has sent me to England, Austria, Holland. I could go to asia if I wanted to but it doesn't interest me. And I've earned enough to pay for family trips to Mexico, Italy, and back to England.

I have absolutely NO regrets about how I've lived my life. I've taken care of myself so when I return at 66 I fully expect to still enjoy traveling as much or more than I would've in my 20s.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6493463

Oops "return" -> "retire". Also I have more interest in history and foreign countries now so it's better to travel now when I can appreciate what I'm seeing.

I suspect that what a person in their 20s calls "adventure" could be had anywhere. I'll betcha that dancing late in a bar is just as good in South Florida or Key West as it is in Majorca.

You are assuming that many things are held equal. That you will live under the same conditions your parents did. You best muck those assumptions real quick buddy...

Re: Is it better to travel and live a fulfilled life of adventure, or is better to sit and home and save money for retirement?
I am in my early sixties. I have lived a life of adventure. I've traveled and lived all over the world and basically done whatever I felt like doing at the time. At around age 50 I realized that my energy levels weren't what they once were and I would eventually become "old", and that I had not made any plans for my reTIRED years.

The major thing that I have missed out on is owning a home. I didn't want to 'settle down'. But now I do. Real estate prices quickly went up so much that I couldn't break into the market, espicially as my credit report reflected the life of a 'happy traveler.'

If I had bought a house in the 1980's and subbed it out as a rental, it would be paid for by now. I could completely rehab it, move in, and have no rent/mortgage expenses. Most people retire with a paid for house but I will be making mortgage payments til I die...this eats up a huge portion of my retirement income.

I also wish that I had thought to purchase rural farm acreage, as that is going to be really important in years to come.

So my advice is, figure out a way to buy yourself a "place" that you can retire to later, rent it out, and THEN go travel. You will be surprised how fast thirty years goes by.

excellent brain-stimulating post for the masses of greed-stricken mindless mental-midgets allowed to propagate government embedded news receiver dumbing-down genes.

seriously surprised this question wasn't previously presented to this cerebral forum earlier.

little post, well-deserving of of big bump.

now, if we could just get SNN ( Soro's News Networks ) and FOX to present same question in audience polls, then independent entity to perform comparative analaysis, and miraculously somehow get government to overlook public release results, I dare-say my aforementioned seemingly stereotypification point will prove.

government genomics en-masse successfully nets it far more revenue than during 1840s. Subsequent industrial revolution, led-by Illuminati, turned more than square-headed nails round.

I travel to keep my employment, I'm aviation mech., ya wanna live you either move or change careers,

Before that i traveled in a military family, every three years we/pops was transferred to another location,

I would have preferred roots in one location, yet those with roots would love to have travelled, catch 22..

Well as i see it the issue here is that we somehow feel its a difficult/impossible choice. Society is more or less designed so that you work entire life. Its when you are young and healthy and strong, you should take yourself, and perhaps your family if you have one, on "adventures"...

makes sense, however with no family decided early-on 'high-risk' life comprised of sheer suicide missions; some say but all think.

results? bank account senseless / centsless 60-years.

recommendation, to youth: Stick with any 'federal government job' ( 'not civilian contracting' ) - obtain 'enlightenment' ( as-to government compartmented inadequacies ) and 'retirement' ( reliable income ).

According to my ex, who worked in a couple of retirement homes, those who were happiest, were those who went/DID the things they wanted to do; those who didn't were sorry they DIDN'T and could NO LONGER DO those things.

I did 'My thing' in my late forty -fifties, BETWEEN Divorces, when I really had the least money, BUT HAD the ABILITY to do it. NOW, I look at pictures of Mayan Temples in Mexico, London, Paris, Germany, Austria and Switzerland and say to myself " Yeah, I've been there... SEEN that. "

Only place I would like to have seen was Greece !

From one traveller to another: Things have changed in too many ways, all of them detrimental. travelling is not what it used to be.

I feel very sorry for the present youth, many of whom have the same 'travel bug' in their genes since time immemorial.

For those who argue against travelling, it is because you never knew what it was like and times have changed to confirm your attitude and now believe you were right all along.

You wait till you're on your deathbed and you'll know that the greatest meaning of life came from where you went and what you did there.

Re: Is it better to travel and live a fulfilled life of adventure, or is better to sit and home and save money for retirement?
Hmmm.. I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I'm also 17 so I have a lot of time to mull it over but:

I travelled for year in Ecuador, and I've never been so happy. All of my bad habits pretty much went away and I didn't WANT anything. I felt like the experiences were feeding any craving I ever had for a better life. By the end, although I was still enjoying myself, I realized that I wasn't really being very productive for the larger community and had absolutely no responsibility. I felt like I was in limbo. I think that if I were to carry on longer like that I would have gone insane.

If you are holding a job that allows you to "save up" you clearly have responsibility– However this doesn't mean your happy.
If your consistently traveling with out a job, you're not really being very responsible (which is ok if its just vacation but I mean long term) and your happiness can be almost fake, or thin.

There is definitely a healthy balance between being happy and being responsible.

I just think of people that have millions in a retirement fund then die before they retire.

I faced this same dilema; a major consideration was the changes in the system itself... it simply can no longer be trusted.

So you cant really sit with money in the bank; cant trust 401k's, cant trust anything systemic because they can always "turn off your chip" and you wake up with a frozen account because you have a ron paul sticker.

So spend it, keep it out of there, live for today.

it's 2012, for gods sake.

lmao

then, you gotta hope god hurles a meteor at the world when you run out of money.

Live enough that you don't wind up in a nursing home with a huge bank account and no time or ability to enjoy the money. Spend a lot, but save a little too. When you're old and on Morphine in your last weeks of life, you won't care about how large the accounts are. You'll care about what you did or did not get to do in and with your life. You'll care about those you've loved and who have loved you. And hopefully you'll care about your relationship with your creator. But the one thing you won't give a damn about is your money, any longer. It isn't any fun if you're too sick and feeble to spend it. Remember that! While money cannot buy happiness (no it cannot) it can be used to help those you love. It can relieve human suffering in some small ways. And it can be used to make a difference in the future by educating those who might not otherwise have access to a higher education.

I had a good friend who was a hardworking lady all her life. Her husband retired and she only had a year to go and they planned to travel Europe and Asia. Then she was dx'd with cancer and died before her retirement. Made me so sad that she wasted all those years sitting at a desk.

Shortly after she died the company portfolio lost nearly half its value due to the crash of 2008. So she would have gotten screwed anyway. My grandmother told me when she was young she always wanted to go to Hawaii. by the time she got there she was 50 and tired. She told me to do it while you're young, there's no turning back time.

Go see the world before it's gone.

This is exactly the problem with dumb people who plan their lives according to an ILLUSION!
Are you willing to bet your own freedom and chance at life that that precious house will always be yours.. no one will take it.
Or that fat bank account will always be there.
Well if you do.. I don't feel sorry for you when you lose it and most already have.

Live your life.. it's not about possessions..it's about memories, and adventure.

This thread actually went very philosophical / very good.

It somehow shows peoples thoughts and feelings about what we want to do. You can probably see differences in the posts according to the countries represented in the thread. One reason i guess is the bureaucrazy works in different ways, like pension system, taxes, social care etc.

Re: Is it better to travel and live a fulfilled life of adventure, or is better to sit and home and save money for retirement?
I decided to travel first. I met people, retired people, who were travelling in the same places I was. Mainly Latin American countries. I was in my twenties then and living in those places. These people always made a point to tell me the same thing. "Don't question what you are doing even when times are tough, because if I had it to do over again, knowing what I know now, I would not have worked all my life for retirement. Now I have the money, but I don't have the youth to enjoy it like you are. Life is to be lived and enjoyed. Don't waste the best years of your life working for the man just because that's what they say you should do. There is time for work and money, but you never get your youth back. It could all be over tomorrow. or not. The important thing is to live and get out there and enrich your life through experience. You can never study for these things."

Alot of older people that I met told me this or some variation of this.

People have asked me, well what about your retirement? and Social Security? My reply was always the same. When I'm old enough to retire, Social Security will be broke and the systems that we have now will not exist anymore. That was twenty years ago...and I still have quite a few years left to retirement age. My answer hasn't changed.

See the world, you won't regret it. And believe me, when you take the steps to put yourself into situations that are risky and may seem crazy to others, universe looks out for you and opportunities always present themselves just when you need them the most. Alot of faith helps.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18990562

So well put ! AC 0562...
I concur 1000%, especially on the retirement question.

I came into this world with no-thing and I'm going out the same way. So I do what my soul moves me to do, on every level... and I Believe in the concept of "Evermore".

Re: Is it better to travel and live a fulfilled life of adventure, or is better to sit and home and save money for retirement?
A buddy of mine in his 40's has traveled all over the world, has played golf at all these awesome golf courses (he loves golf), and has had numerous adventures.

A lot of my friends in their 40's have a bank full of money but have never done shit. They have worked away their entire youth-seems like a waste of the good years.

I would much rather travel when I am younger and have some energy left and can do things. Traveling when I am 70 and not being able to do anything physical does not seem like too much fun.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2364968

I'm also in my 40s and always lived by the idea of 'tomorrow may never come' and that obviously means old age and a pension may never come either.

I travelled before I got married and I travelled with my husband after we got married. When we had children we didn't want to move around too much so we've been in Spain for the past 9 or 10 years. We're British and Spain was a new culture but close enough to visit family and for them to visit us.

Now 2 of our kids are grown and travel by themselves (volunteering during uni holidays) and we're moving again with the youngest who has 5 years until he finishes college. After that we plan to try house sitting. in various places around the world, for a few years.

You just have to create a balance and I'm sure the 9 to 5 lifestyle is for some people who live in the same place all their lives but it was just never for me. I've lost count of the amount friends I grew up with, saying to me "I wish I could have done what you've done with your life" - the sad thing is that they could have. I went to the same schools as they did and grew up in the same town but I just wanted to explore the world and found a way to do it.

A skilled trade helps because tradespeople are needed all over the world at one time or another.

You can strike a balance and do a bit of both.

First, fund your own Roth IRA account for the year.

Then save for the travel and go traveling either once a year or take 6 months and go adventuring.

Just beware the debts that can pile up quickly while traveling.

You could also be adventurous and work for temp agencies in different cities around the world. Gives you a chance to live and work in various places. Start with whatever draws you to it or simply toss a coin on a world map and start wherever it lands.

No matter what, just know that it always sucks to be broke, but it especially sucks later in life.

I like this thread too! Thanks OP! hf

To your question of if adventuous travels make a better life? I think the answer is yes...no....maybe....& all of the above.

I know people that travel for their jobs, jetting across the world on a weekly basis. Some enjoy it....some do not.

Some people that take yearly cruises in the tropics, and for them, this is the perfect way to vacation.

Some people that would rather stay home and work in their gardens...preferring instead, to live a solitude type lifestyle.

I also know people that are very family oriented & nearly 100% of their free time is spent with relatives, especially their grand-babies. For them, traveling is completely un-neccessary.....their passion comes from quality time spent with their kids & grandkids whom are only a few miles away.

The 'perfect' life and how to make it fulfilling is individualized just as anything else we like/dislike. Favorite genre of music, fav food, interests/hobbies, etc.

Very thought provoking....afro

Save 15% of all money that passes through your hands. Sometimes it will seem like it's not worth bothering and sometimes it will seem worthwhile but always put 15% aside, no matter what bills have come in.

5% goes towards long term savings.

5% is to save towards your next adventure and you spend it when it reaches it's target.

The other 5% is for short term opportunities that come your way.

You can do both. Not everything in life has to be taken to extremes. Travel in moderation. Some of the most Beautiful and life changing destinations in the world require very little money. First class vacations are, in my experience, contrived and cater to those who only wish to experience themselves.
