Quoting: Astromut It's coming... I'm probably already banned and just don't know it. Heh, it finally happened, they banned my sock. I guess they couldn't hack it when I challenged them to show a new astrometrically-solvable image of a known Kuiper belt object. I'll still take just such an image myself though, if you want to make another video about them you can include it. |

TBar, you should post a comment asking them to come present their information at GLP and to get in touch with Phenn about getting them a show on the next round of GLP VC shows. Quoting: Astromut I would definitely tune in for this one... I think a lot of people would, but unfortunately this guy is too cowardly to face me or TBar any place where he doesn't have mod powers to silence dissent. I strongly suspect it's just one guy, astrolpatriot, under a different moniker. Astrol used to have exclusive photos from "the skyview team" up on his website just before he went into complete hiding. The style of the videos is quite similar too. If that's the case he'd probably never let his voice be heard for fear his followers would recognize it from his previous chat room sessions as astrolpatriot back in the Elenin days. |

In any case, I've acquired an image of the Kuiper belt object Makemake. I'm going to PM you the link to the solved image, but please re-solve it under your account so it doesn't show them my name. If you click the file name in the top right corner you can download the unsolved jpg file. Makemake is the small dot in the dead center of the image. If you open the KMZ file and tell it to go to the image and just zoom straight in, it will zoom right into Makemake (and of course if you compare it to the background you'll see there's nothing in the preexisting sky survey image at that position). I don't know how to you want to attack it, I was just thinking a short video recapping their latest hissy fit, making sure to point out that astrometry.net can solve images from every area of the sky. The index files it compares against have complete sky coverage, the more massive index files for small image scales (narrow field images) are split up into 12 segments that piece together to form the complete sky (the index files for widefield images are in single pieces that cover the entire sky at once). Here's an image showing the breakup of the larger index files: [link to trac.astrometry.net] The index files themselves are derived from the USNO-B catalogue of stars, but it can also be adapted to use the Tycho2 catalog or indeed any FITS binary table with RA and DEC. The bottom line is that it doesn't use Flickr as the database as skyview claimed, they just provide their services for flickr users. You can mention they also tried to say that we weren't able to see into the kuiper belt, then hit them with our image of Makemake and say we asked them to take an image of a known kuiper belt object like this one that could be astrometrically solved, but so far they haven't shown any real KBOs like this. You can mention they also tried to say that we weren't able to see into the kuiper belt, then hit them with our image of Makemake and say we asked them to take an image of a known kuiper belt object like this one that could be astrometrically solved, but so far they haven't shown any real KBOs like this. Mention of course that the coordinates show that it was taken today and that it is solvable astrometrically. Ok, I'll do some more research on it. Maybe tomorrow I can get something out. They suggest that TBar and I should die! I show 'em how it's done and take a picture of a REAL KBO! Wow. This is priceless. That latest vid they made is ludecrous nonsense and they have people on there calling people "haters" for proving their nonsense wrong. It's hilarious! Thanks TBAR and Astromut! Quoting: Menow 19658242 My pleasure! I forgot to mention, they botched up the equation for orbital velocity towards the end; they give a unitless mass which makes no sense (not the first time they've done that, I guess it's supposed to be Jupiter masses?), a semi-major axis of 42.5 AUs which suggests an orbital period of approximately 277 years or so (damn, this thing passes by all the time apparently, and no one notices?), then they list the formula for orbital velocity of a circular orbit, which this is clearly not according to the figure they drew... They also state the mass figure in the formula is the mass of the KBO... which would mean the formula is actually the formula for the velocity of a satellite in a circular orbit around the KBO given an orbital distance of r, not the orbital velocity of the KBO itself relative to our solar system. It's tarded to the extreme. Last Edited by Astromut on 07/13/2012 12:50 AM |
