This is a troubling documentary about the governments war on small family family farms. Joel Salitan (Poly Face Farms), featured in this & many other documentaries about food freedom, spoke at a University near me about 2 years ago. After he spoke to a packed crowd about government invasion on small family farms, someone from the crowd asked him "is there anyone in Washington DC who understands what is going on, & who will take a stand?"..to which, without missing a beat. Joel Salitan quickly replied "Ron Paul, he is the only one who "gets it". Many in the crowd cheered. Watch the documentary 'Farmageddon' below & spread it to friends & family. The documentary “Farmageddon” peddles food for thought, posing such questions as: Why is it so easy to buy cigarettes but so difficult to purchase raw, unpasteurized milk? A pack of Marlboros arguably has no benefit beyond a temporary buzz — and has plenty of drawbacks — while raw milk is loaded with nutrients but carries a small risk of E. coli, that potentially lethal bacteria we now know can crop up on bean sprouts or spinach.

That is just one of the compelling curiosities unveiled in Kristin Canty’s surprisingly engrossing documentary, a worthy addition to the growing annals of movies and books advocating for sustainable farming methods.

The topic of raw milk seems admittedly obscure. Given that it isn’t available in all states, many Americans might not have heard of it (although spend some time in Berkeley, Calif., and you might unintentionally become an expert). Regardless of the food in question, the subject serves as an effective entry point to consider a much larger, more troubling story that begs viewers to wonder why the government has spent so much time and money cracking down on small farms. Given some of the astonishing episodes of government raids in recent years, Canty is wise to simply let individual stories do the talking.

The documentary travels from Vermont to Virginia and New York to Georgia to investigate the interplay of politics and small agriculture. The film asserts that in one case, federal agents spent a million dollars surveilling a family on a small sheep farm before confiscating all of the animals and euthanizing them. The reason purportedly was mad cow disease, although there haven’t been occurrences of the disease in sheep before or since, and documents that were unsealed thanks to a court order revealed that the animals in question were not carriers.

Meanwhile, a Mennonite farmer was arrested after armed federal agents took $65,000 worth of his food and equipment, even though he had been explicitly told that his business practices were perfectly legitimate. Those are just a couple of the many strange stories that involve seemingly needless raids on small farms, some of which put the owners out of business.

The movie probably could do without voice-overs from Canty or the opening scenes, all of which are replayed later in the film, but those are small quibbles with what becomes a convincing argument that would do the original muckrakers proud.

Given the rise of farmers markets and increasing interest in buying locally, this is a film well worth a watch. Of course, as one interviewee admits, not all small farms are good, nor are all big farms bad. Even so, who benefits by putting the underdog at a disadvantage? That might be the the most compelling question of all.

ok, it's somewhat similar here, we are all owned by da gubbmint, they own everything, we are only permitted the illusion of ownership when it suits them.

i'm a fan of milk. I wouldn't drink raw milk personally myself, but if somebody want's to, they should be allowed.

I work in the field (aka agrocorp) and was raised on a small farm myself.

On one hand my income comes out of the sector of big agro so i honestly have to admit that my view is not unbiased and although not a "stylish" job you can brag with there is money in the field.

On the other hand i see the concentration of the most important production sector in few corporate hands on this planet with worries for the future.

Because the Goverment has an undeclared war against the Amercian people and our way of life.....EVERY house hold should grow something they can eat....be it a single tomato plant hanging off your balcony to growing hydro lettuce in a spare space....veggies in with the flowers...your cost......priceless

im in the desert. But i have successfully grown a few tomato plants, it was alot easier than i first thought before I tried it.

Just don't use city water stright from the tap....the crap in it will stunt any plant growth.....let it sit open for a day or two.....most crap will oxidize away.

I raise tropical fish and it sad to think that tap water kills fish too!!

Stupid big dairies started using the BGH to increase milk production. So much milk was produced the price was way low.
Pasturization HAS to be done to keep bacteria levels low enough (because of the puss) to make it marketable, so it won't make you sick.

My Omish freinds don't use it. Don't pasteurize.......

I have skimmed the cream and made my own butter.

I've heard up to 40 % of our milk is FROM CHINA now.
Dehydrated powder that is reconstituted and put into the bulk milk supply.

And UHT pasteurized "ORGANIC" ......
Ultra high temperature pasteurized........
They cook the shit out of it, shelf life for months.....
inert, inorganic, no nutrients, White liquid plastic.
DOESN'T EVEN NEED REFRIGERATION. SITS IN WAREHOUSES FOR MONTHS AND IT'S STILL "GOOD".

No wonder people are dying.

Interesting.....so if you leave the water out for a day or two, it will in effect purify itself? Would it get rid of fluoride too?

You can get rid of the chlorine by pouring the water back and forth into another container for about 15 times...it will dissipate the chlorine..the fluoride ????

I use water collected in rain barrels for my organic garden. Tap water is nasty.

Progressives and corporate cronyism go hand in hand. Government has been putting farmers out of business, I mean "helping out farmers" since Woodrow Wilson, pushing out the little guy and just encouraging the middle men to take more and more of the profits between farmer and consumer. You always hear some guy from the city who reads how much dairy products cost and looks at how much land farmers own and think they are rich. But unless you are at least a 1,000 cow incorporated outfit, no dairy bill passed this last century has really helped you, small farmers get less per hundred weight for their milk than big farms, even if it's the same quality on an adjacent farm, being put into the same milk truck. So what has happened as many farmers retire, or it goes through estate settlements, the land gets sold off and taken out of production. Or the landowner just puts in forage crops he sells, or leases to active farmers. Good ol' Gov. Coumo, to keep second home owner taxes low upstate decided that anyone making less than $10,000 annually from their land will no longer be tax exempt, and since few farmers can afford paying $10,000 in rent there go that many more farms up for sale or subdivision because at the same time Coumo promised a 2% tax rate increase limit, sounded wonderful to chumps but then they did as I expected, raised valuations obscenely higher considering how bad the real estate market is (and only promises to get worse as taxes go up). Meanwhile no one can figure out why we are losing farms, and the younger generation, in NY?
