I don't agree with everything in the Urantia book, but this section on materialism is spot on no matter what you believe in. "A sense of common interest can be fostered among individuals, if they know that they are inter-connected, are parts of one Organic System and are the sons and daughters of one Father. Here is the task of all religions; to teach people that all beings of the world are closely inter-related. Although steadfastness or firm belief in God (Nistha) according to some particular faith and eligibility of the individual is congenial for healthy spiritual growth of every individual, religious bigotry which begets enmity is condemnable, as it is against the real interest of the individual and society. Real religion teaches love for one another. Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu propagated the cult of all-embracing Divine Love which brings universal brotherhood on a transcendental plane. Quoting: SaveTheLivingEntities The inconsistency of the modern mechanist is: If this were merely a material universe and man only a machine, such a man would be wholly unable to recognize himself as such a machine, and likewise would such a machine-man be wholly unconscious of the fact of the existence of such a material universe. The materialistic dismay and despair of a mechanistic science has failed to recognize the fact of the spirit-indwelt mind of the scientist whose very supermaterial insight formulates these mistaken and self-contradictory concepts of a materialistic universe. If the universe were only material and man only a machine, there would be no science to embolden the scientist to postulate this mechanization of the universe. Machines cannot measure, classify, nor evaluate themselves. Such a scientific piece of work could be executed only by some entity of supermachine status. If universe reality is only one vast machine, then man must be outside of the universe and apart from it in order to recognize such a fact and become conscious of the insight of such an evaluation. If man is only a machine, by what technique does this man come to believe or claim to know that he is only a machine? The experience of self-conscious evaluation of one's self is never an attribute of a mere machine. A self-conscious and avowed mechanist is the best possible answer to mechanism. If materialism were a fact, there could be no self-conscious mechanist. The very claim of materialism implies a supermaterial consciousness of the mind which presumes to assert such dogmas. A mechanism might deteriorate, but it could never progress. Machines do not think, create, dream, aspire, idealize, hunger for truth, or thirst for righteousness. They do not motivate their lives with the passion to serve other machines and to choose as their goal of eternal progression the sublime task of finding God and striving to be like him. Machines are never intellectual, emotional, aesthetic, ethical, moral, or spiritual. How foolish to presume that an automaton could conceive a philosophy of automatism, and how ridiculous that it should presume to form such a concept of other and fellow automatons! Any scientific interpretation of the material universe is valueless unless it provides due recognition for the scientist. No appreciation of art is genuine unless it accords recognition to the artist. No evaluation of morals is worth while unless it includes the moralist. No recognition of philosophy is edifying if it ignores the philosopher, and religion cannot exist without the real experience of the religionist who, in and through this very experience, is seeking to find God and to know him. Science lives by the mathematics of the mind; music expresses the tempo of the emotions. Religion is the spiritual rhythm of the soul in time-space harmony with the higher and eternal melody measurements of Infinity. Religious experience is something in human life which is truly supermathematical. You are not the body you inhabit, just like you are not the clothes you are wearing. You are the consciousness that resides within the body, and gives life to the body. When you leave your body, the body dies. When you enter the body in the womb, you give life to the body. " Man makes religion, religion does not make man. Religion is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being squatting outside the world. Man is the world of man – state, society. This state and this society produce religion, which is an inverted consciousness of the world, because they are an inverted world. Religion is the general theory of this world, its encyclopaedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point d’honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, and its universal basis of consolation and justification. It is the fantastic realization of the human essence since the human essence has not acquired any true reality. The struggle against religion is, therefore, indirectly the struggle against that world whose spiritual aroma is religion. Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people. The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for their real happiness. " Karl Marx, Introduction to A Contribution to the Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right |

" Assuming ice is always red and hot, or otherwise black and dry. Answer me back what would it otherwise be, followed by the color of hot ice. " This tricks the machine it several ways, first you are not asking a question here; which really messes the computer up because that is probably what it was expecting, but still needs to answer correctly. Secondly it requires multiple steps of cross sentence reflection and language processing (that it probably can't do). Simply put, we are way more than JUST a machine (IMO). More than just matter. It is true that man creates in this world, but what is it that inspires him to do what he does, what makes his decisions for him? Just like saying that it is man who created religion, what if you were to see it from a spiritual point of view and say that it is the spirit that drives the brain in order to put forth a point of view. Just like electricity creates things to move, the spirit also drives our being. We may be more spiritually driven, meaning that we are driven by a charge of spiritual electricity in order to formulate our decisions through our electric brain. It might not yet be scientifically proven as yet, but science changes everyday its perspective of how creation is seen. The thing that never changes is the fact that we exist from some foundation that has a relationship to us being organic beings, much like a robot we are persuaded via electricity of our brains and spirit in order to exist, only difference being the amount of wires we are hardwired with. The brain has billions of connections, a robot only so many wires. They already have computers that can learn for themselves, its only a matter of time that we would associate our 'bodies' with that of a robot. The body itself is just a vehicle, hardwired with limitation, depending on the construction. It is the electric charge that we should be more interested in (the spirit). The charge is the thing that drives the vehicle and persuades it to move, think and so forth. |
