Where do you keep the one gallon of water you will

need each day?
 Quoting: I Ban Thee

The best idea with water is drink as much in the morning and at night as you can. . you should try to plan your nights around a source of water for that reason. Use the maps or the GPS to plan out how Long your going to hike and have it end at a water source. If you do that you won't need to carry more then 2 liters with you when your walking. Now if there is not water for more then a day you will have to carry enought to get you to the next source. Water is heavy plan your path and day around it.

Don't have a bag everything I need fits on my web gear.

A question OP, does that pack slow down your running times and by how much?

A suggestion about that bag trim it down so when you hear RUN FASTER you can actually pick up speed and zig zag!!!!!!

first aid kit

I don’t feel the need to describe every item in this first aid kit. I am sure every one of you has one laying around so i will just hit on the unique items not found in your everyday store bought kits. In the blue bag i carry an assortment of bandages and trauma pads along with some normal pills and ointments. I also have an Epipen (epinephrine injector) that can be used for life-threatening allergic reactions caused by insect bites, foods, medications, latex, and other causes. the Readi masks are a great product that comes flat but unfolds to a full face mask and a particulate air-purifying mask that filters more than 95% of particles from entering the lungs.

QuikClot is great for quickly stopping bleeding from superficial wounds, minor cuts and abrasions. I also have suture kits and medical stitch tape for closing open wounds. I also carry toilet paper, bug spray, Afterbite, baby powder, latex gloves, extra rope, candles, welding glass (for sun observation),condoms, sewing kit, emergency blanket and a first aid book. I also have in there some vitamin C packets and multi vitamins. The rest is just your normal everyday items.

Well thanks for reading threw and I hope you saw at least one item you haven't thought of or something useful to add to your pack. For the people out there that don’t have something like this I would strongly suggest you start to put some things together. You never know when the next emergency will enter your life, like a good Boy scout always be prepared.

If I may - it looks pretty good - you might consider adding some potassium iodate or iodine (I got mine fairly inexpensive at survivors supply .com) or you can get' em pretty much anywhere.

You need a LifeStraw too. That way you have a way toi get clean water no matter where you go.

I got one in my pack. weighs maybe 2 ounces. strictly for bugout....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23011194

I have looked into these and think there a great idea but they have a few downfalls in my opinion. First is they cant treat water in bulk, so while you will have water to drink you wont have clean water for other uses. That also leaves all the water your carrying not treated till you suck it out. I think the aquamira drops are much more useful in treating large quantities of water. If you have to share water that means you need to have the person suck off the same straw your using, that could lead to problems and sharing of germs. I am not saying the lifestraw wont work, I just think there are better options out there for the same size, weight, and price.

Hey OP,

Great thread. I looked into these and thought of the same thing. Then I questioned if it would be possibly to attach rubber tubing over the end where you suck from and then siphon it like a fish tank? Pail out a bucket of the contaminated water and then put it high up?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19079034

thanks,
I have never used the lifestraw so i am just guessing here. But It would depend on how much restriction the filter has. I assume its packed with carbon and drawing threw it is going to have some resistance so i dont think you could set up a siphon with just a hose. They do sell camping gravity filters and they work well. You place your dirty water in a top bag and the water gravity feeds into another bag below it. Kinda like a brita filter for the house but for camping. that same idea might work for the lifestraw if you attached the intake to an overhead bag and had it drain to another. just guessing though.

Hat's off to you for through hiking the AT! Thanks to you and all the cogent posters for all the useful info and wisdom.

What are your thoughts about a small propane stove and spare bottle for cooking in rainy weather, as it relates to weight and volume in your bag?

Thanks again!

Black trash bags! Water carrier, string one up for a makeshift tent, create a poncho...

40 Ways to Use Garbage Bags in Emergencies:
[link to saltnprepper.com]

I have a hiking backpack that has a clip off large fanny pack- In the main part I have items suitable for extended stay (1-2 weeks). I use this as a 'fire, get out of the house' or 'could be displaced for a while' bag (think Katrina) Includes 'luxury' items:
extra sets of clothing, socks
shower flip-flops (if sharing public showers, you'll want these)
Toiletries-mini shampoo/conditioners, deodorant, etc.
pack of playing cards, thick book
fleece blanket
extra bottles of water, 2 wks of food (bag of rice & bag of wheatberries- both can be just soaked in water and eaten, jar of peanut butter, 5 packages of tuna, 12-pack of crackers, package of SPAM, etc...if you meet up with 4 people who are hungry, 2 wks = 3 days-think ahead!)
Solar flower from Dollar Tree- bobblehead type flower, when you stick it in the sun it waves (seriously! its fairly small, but makes me soo happy. And if I'm using my bag, I'm gonna need all the happiness I can get!)
Total weighs in around 30-35 lbs.
Remember, this is a 'pack whatever will fit in the bag' bag. Things are placed in order of importance- so my 'Book of Quotations' will get tossed before my extra pair of running shoes, which will be tossed before my fleece blanket.

The large fanny pack is more of a 'Oh shit I have to run NOW' bag. Garbaqe bags, pair of smartwool socks, hat, work gloves, machete-type knife w compass, 3in blade knife w seatbelt cutter/window punch, water filter, purifying tablets, fire-starting items, food for 1 week, glasses and pair of extra contacts, impt documents on USB, 2 bottles of water, sewing kit, first aid kit, bandana etc. I also have a fairly compact sleeping bag (not counted in weight, but essential for UP weather if sleeping outdoors).
Total weighs around 20 lbs. Not going to be comfortable or have luxuries, but this will enable me to survive for a while without lugging a large pack around.

I realized I described WAY more items than needed- Just trying to give an overview of how I pack-different BOB's are essential. My vehicle has food/water/fire starter/winter weather clothing & boots/extra blankets too. Fire in your home and you now have to be in a hotel? In the 'luxury bag' you can put on pj's like normal, read a familiar book, shave, all normal things. Just a thought :D Awesome thread by the way!

**side note- Dollar Tree and Walmart both had the platypus water bags-I got 5 for my BOB's- completely flat except for the mouthpiece, so they pack wonderfully.
 Quoting: muffin_van 3737813

awesome post muffin_van, sorry it took so long for the reply life has been a little crazy for me this week.

Thanks for the garbage bag link I have never thought of so many uses for them. I loved the idea about throwing leaves in it and using it for a mattress pad or sleeping bag. That could very well save your life and everyone has a garbage bag and some leaves.

Again great post and great points! I fully agree with everything you said. Different BOB's are essential. The gear i would grab if i was setting off into the woods by myself to try to survive without stocked food for months is completely different then something i would grab if "katrina" was coming and i had to relocate inland. There are many many factors that would dictate what equipment, or luxury items you bring. thanks for pointing that out.

Another good point you brought up is your vehicle should also have a bag. I use my car to hold supplies for other people that might be with me or around if something happens. some cheap backpacks, rain gear, extra food, water and other random stuff that is useful. Not being worried about weight allows for anything to be added there. I have a large duffle bag that is about a hundred pounds in the trunk, it comes in handy all the time. Make sure you throw a few of these in there, women will love it.

and platypus bags are my favorite, great that Walmart has them cheap.

You know your shit, best of luck to you..

wait for it

Re: My 15 pound EDC survival bag with pictures and description. What is in your Bag? (Guns added page 3)
The other book is native American crafts and skills :) .. the first one I recommended is a must read .. library borrow, only because it is a bigger sized book .. this one I would buy .. amazon used books are always cheap ..

My off grid property is in the green mountains of Vermont .. literally 50 households in the whole town .. the rest is farmland .. the neighbors supply my cousin with almost all of her food .. I also have a smaller stock of food there, green house, and about to buy solar panels, converters, etc .. unless it was a serious natural disaster or some kind of chemical threat .. where I am going, even the federal government wouldn't be pulling through ..and if they did.. they would have serious issues .. the state alone doesn't take their garbage but are prideful hardcore Americans who own a rack of guns and stock of ammo .. the best thing about it is the nearest walmart is over an hour away .. and the closest thing to a populated area is over a half hour ..and, unlike CT the people and communities are tight .. your local general store .. it is normal to have a friendly convo with a stranger .. For real, last night I almost got jumped by the popeyes employees for asking for my $ back after 30 minutes of waiting ..

I won't even go through traffic .. we are following the Berkshire hiking trails into mass. .. owl mountain .. I think (more coffee) .. and continue from there .. once I hit Vermont I can ride backroads and trails the rest of the way .. with multiple pit stops I have available ..

I really need to get on that handgun permit .. I shoot like a pro but really need to learn tactics to hold a higher powered pistol .. I have been put on my butt shooting cans and things .. while my smaller cousins laugh at the "city girl" lol ..

thanks for the book it was 4 bucks on amazon.

can you please send me the GPS location for your property. I will never tell a soul and only show up in the darkest of hour. I am very friendly, useful, healthy, and possess many valuable skills. I will bring all my own supplies and much more for everyone else. I will also teach you how to shoot pistol like a boss. thanks in advance.

Re: My 15 pound EDC survival bag with pictures and description. What is in your Bag? (Guns added page 3)
I scanned all my important documents (birth certificate, marriage license, passport, drivers license, insurance info, critical phone numbers) and loaded the scans on a thumb drive. I also downloaded the SAS survival handbook, the "When there is no Doctor" book, and a book on gardening and seed saving, on the same thumb drive and keep it in my bug out bag. Depending on the level of shtf, it may be that I can access the information on a computer/laptop, and in any event it only weighs about as much as a couple of q-tips.

Another good thing for your bag is an extra pair of boot laces. Great barter item and could be useful for other things as well.

Also get yourself some Pepto Bismol tablets, they are handy as they don't leak or spoil and can SAVE you in an emergency situation when food and water sources are questionable. Using similar logic, I also have a small bottle of Immodium A-D, which will stop diarrhea almost immediately. If you are trying to escape or hide in an emergency scenario, you don't need to be worrying about stopping every five minutes on the side of the road....sorry if TMI, but hey, chance favors the prepared mind lol.

Re: My 15 pound EDC survival bag with pictures and description. What is in your Bag? (Guns added page 3)
GHB- Get Home Bag-could be very light weight with minimum of supplies+water+tennis shoes to get home.

BOB-Bug Out Bag could be heavier but left in a closet at home or in a car trunk with other items+ heavier boots etc.

How about diversifying-one at home and one in each vehicle !

INCH-I am Never Coming Home bag might have some of the same as a GHB or a BOB, and then some different things
that might be of more value over a longer period.

Any of them could have copies of important papers such as insurance, licenses-professional & driving, Social Security Cards, critical phone numbers, deeds, contracts, wills, etc.
+a digital(encripted)thumb drive with the same info.

A layered system can give you more security.

One good full tang knife is 0 knife if lost.

Two good full tang knives is 1 good knife if one is lost.

So critical items need to be in each level.

Three of some items is not too many.

But as a "backpacker" since the 70's...my packs are much lighter now.

Do you remember how many pairs of "spectacles"(Prince-Nez style) near sighted Teddy Roosevelt had on his person going up San Juan heights-Kettle Hill? ( ; )

Take what is essential-

[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

Perhaps a fanny pack for Get Home bag+walking shoes + water.

.. if you have to drop your Bug Out Bag and run...you still have essentials....even a weapon if for some reason you put down your Bug out Bag...

A heavy duty contractor 55 gallon bag can be folded and protected in a zip lock and put in a fanny pack for a bivy sack for sleeping or as a "rain coat". If you are wet and in 60 degree F. with wind you can die of hypothermia.

Bivouac sack [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

Wool is heavy but can maintain some body heat when wet.
