Message Subject NSA: Cybercrime is 'the greatest transfer of wealth in history'

I thought the greatest transfer of wealth in history was the super-rich looting gutting the middle classes of all the industrialized nations, selling off industrial capacity, and enriching themselves through casino pseudo-capitalism, rigged markets, etc.

That's the second greatest heist.

The first greatest was the replacement of real money with Federal Reserve Notes.

Yes! You guys are so right- was gonna say that. And in fact I was initially thinking perhaps this guy was setting the stage for blaming the next financial crisis on mysterious cyber heists (that presumably weren't traced or documented). But, I think he's saying intellectual property and not finances were stolen, so maybe not. Yeah, cybercrime is a huge deal, but perhaps companies can just take sensitive computers off the larger internet. They can just set up intranets w/ perhaps a few extra computers w/ full internet access for research/email. Actually most people probably already have their own laptop, so could just use those in conjunction w/ intranet only comps at work. Obviously transferring files to customers and collaborators still would involve vulnerability, but at least it's not persistent.

Although I suppose that once thieves realized what computers to monitor they could just do that and snag info when it comes, and so maybe persistent exposure isn't that much worse. Perhaps it's sufficient to just monitor for intruders to a network and use multi factor authentication for file retrieval. Not sure how many small businesses use advanced protections. Here's an interesting document:
