X1.4-Class Solar Flare Causes Radio Outages
The sixth X-Class flare so far this year

By Jason Koebler
July 12, 2012 RSS Feed Print
An X1.4 class flare erupted from the center of the sun, peaking on July 12, 2012 at 12:52 PM EDT. It erupted from Active Region 1520 which rotated into view on July 6.

An X1.4 class flare erupted from the center of the sun, peaking on July 12, 2012 at 12:52 PM EDT. It erupted from Active Region 1520 which rotated into view on July 6.

A giant sunspot released the sun's sixth massive solar flare of the year Thursday, and early indications are that it may have been powerful enough to black out NOAA radio, according to a NASA scientist.

It was the sixth X-class flare this year, and Phillip Chamberlain, a scientist with NASA's solar dynamics observatory, says they are likely to continue through the beginning of 2014 as the sun enters the most active period of its eight-year solar cycle.

[See Spectacular Snapshots of Space]

Thursday's flare has already caused what NOAA classifies as an R3 radio blackout, meaning GPS satellite signals "degraded for about an hour" and there was a "wide area blackout of high frequency radio communication" on Earth.

According to Chamberlain, the region from which the flare erupted was on the part of the sun facing Earth, so it could potentially cause temporary power outages and further communication systems disruptions. He said the observatory would know more within a few hours if Earth is likely to be impacted.

On July 6, a similarly sized flare caused no significant problems on Earth. Thursday's flare, classified as an X1.4, was much smaller than the X5.4 flare that erupted on March 7 and caused temporary outages of military satellites.

if the strongest x flare to come from this solar cycle X6.9 flare were earth directed it would have caused us to go back to the stone age.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14332235

uh no it wouldn't
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1387941

stone age as in our power grid would have been fried along with some satellites that provide tv, cell phone service, and internet.

and without those 4 things right there it would be our stone age.

The Carrington Event of 1859 was the first documented event of a solar ... that the flare reached a peak strength of about X45 Read Again... X45

I mean I love science and I find it interesting to know what is going on with our solar system but I wouldn't poop my pants over a small flare.

We had a X28+...AN X28!! 4/11/03 and we did not lose our electricity then so I'm going to go on a hunch we wont right now either... I can not imagine the mass panic and hysteria on this site during that day. God it had to be marvelous

Solar flares and the body electric......

On Wednesday morning, March 6, 2002, most people on the planet felt reasonably well. The next day, many of us felt as though something had happened to us, but we didn’t know exactly what. From across the United States and Canada many were complaining of headaches, sinus problems, physical and emotional hypersensitivity, sleeplessness, heart arrhythmias, bloating, nose bleeds, itchy eyes, breathing difficulties, dizziness, disorientation, allergic reactions and so on.

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan

Worth remember that there have been 9 flares bigger than this one during this solar cycle and there was nothing to worry about on earth from any of those.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7546576

That's hardly true - you don't know how many people, animals and elements were effected by the electromagnetic rays and what the outcome of those doses of radiation were.

Amen brother! The Carrington Event was 1859 and the telegraph wires burned, even though batteries were disconnected from them. Even the paper in some of the Telegraph offices was ignited by the static and non-static electricity.

It was said to be the brightest nights ever seen by man. The newspapers from some towns and cities from that time claim that it was possible to read newsprint at midnight because of the brightness of the skies. That's a lot of light for midnight and of course it came from the aurora type lights in the upper atmosphere caused by the plasma discharge reaching the upper atmosphere.

It's said that if such an even were to happen again today, we would lose most cell and sat communication in the northern (or southern) hemisphere - depending on which was angled toward the sun when the discharge hit the surface of the earth.

Mhaw, a hundred years ago we didn't even now the existence of flares. So, what can be the doom?

Yeah! For the few. There is no possible way to protect the entire world infrastructure. Only a portion.

From the article link above:

For the cost of a single B-2 bomber or a tiny fraction of the TARP bank bailout, we could invest in preventative measures to avert what might well become the end of our civilization and life as we know it! There is no way to protect against all possible effects from an extreme GMD or an EMP attack, but certainly we could implement measures to protect against the worst effects. Since 2008, Congress has narrowly failed to pass legislation that would implement at least some of the EMP Commission’s recommendations[13].

We have a long ways to go to make our world EMP and GMD safe. Every citizen can do their part to push for legislation to move towards this goal, and to work inside our homes and communities to develop local resilience and self reliance, so that in the event of a long term grid-down scenario, we might make the most of a bad situation. The same tools that are espoused by the “Transition Movement” for developing local self-reliance and resilience to help cope with the twin effects of climate change and peak oil could also serve communities well in the event of an EMP attack or extreme GMD. If our country were to implement safeguards to protect our grid and nuclear power plants from EMP, it would also eliminate the primary incentive for a terrorist to launch an EMP attack. The sooner we take these actions the less chance that an EMP attack will occur!

There is no substantive scientific evidence to suggest that energetic proton events are harmful to human health at ground levels, particularly at latitudes where most of the Earth's population resides. The Earth's magnetic field is exceptionally good at preventing the radiative effects of energetic particles from reaching ground levels. High altitude commercial transpolar aircraft flights have measured increases in radiation during energetic proton events, but a warning system is in place that limits these effects by alerting pilots to lower their cruising altitudes. Aircraft flights away from the polar regions are far less likely to see an impact from solar proton events.
