X45 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19433400 [link to www.space.com] I mean I love science and I find it interesting to know what is going on with our solar system but I wouldn't poop my pants over a small flare. We had a X28+...AN X28!! 4/11/03 and we did not lose our electricity then so I'm going to go on a hunch we wont right now either... I can not imagine the mass panic and hysteria on this site during that day. God it had to be marvelous YOUR wrong Buddy,,... you should read evey thing when you read... "2003: The Ultra-Powerful Halloween Sun Storm(( The sensor topped out at X28, already a massive flare), but later analysis found that the flare reached a peak strength of about X45, NASA has said. The solar storm was part of a string of at least nine major flares over a two-week period. )) "" Solar Flare Classifications Solar flares are classified as A, B, C, M or X according to the peak flux (in watts per square meter, W/m2) of 100 to 800 picometer X-rays near Earth, as measured on the GOES spacecraft. Each class has a peak flux ten times greater than the preceding one, with X class flares having a peak flux of order 10-4 W/m2. Within a class there is a linear scale from 1 to 9, so an X2 flare is twice as powerful as an X1 flare, and is four times more powerful than an M5 flare. The more powerful M and X class flares are often associated with a variety of effects on the near-Earth space environment. 1859: The Carrington Event The Carrington Event of 1859 was the first documented event of a solar flare impacting Earth. The flare was the largest documented solar storm in the last 500 years, NASA scientists have said. It also caused severe interruptions in global telegraph communications, even shocking some telegraph operators and sparking fires when discharges from the lines ignited telegraph paper, according to a NASA description. Your right I did not go into detail and spew out the entire thing.. But your only proving my point even more Glad to help..... |

Does that mean that Solar flares + middle east = spike in gas prices???? And lets not forget the nukes and nuclear reactors over there (or not?) Quoting: ThaSaltineCracka how is it supposed to hit worse in the middle east, we have NO idea when the CME from the FLARE will arrive for sure even, let alone what part of the globe will take the first energies of the CME. THE FLARE ALREADY HIT, within Minutes. These things are not affected by this flare or the cme when it comes in. |

[link to www.futurescience.com] Here's another one... [link to www.csl.army.mil] Have we ever gotten one that big? A big one a few years ago that was NOT earth directed...and the one we mentioned earlier in Sept. 1859 known as "the Carrington Event". I have read reports that estimate the Carrington flare anywhere from an X-45 to an X-67. Did all kinds of weird things. The question is whether our more sensitive technologies are at risk from an event like that. Some reports said the Telegraph lines caught on fire, others say it caused the paper in the telegraph receivers to catch on fire even though the units had been disconnected from the transmission lines. Hard to say as it was 153 years ago. Interesting stuff. "I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it." You have no idea what you're talking about some here actually KNOW that FLARES hit in MINUTES and that there are satellites who record the size of them. OK An X1.4 flare is of no interest in and of itself, except some of us feel them, as I did today. There may or maybe not be small radio type problems. The person you quoted was talking about the flare and not the CME and we will not know how the CME will affect us until it actually shows up in a couple days of so. |

Finally, solar protons accelerated by the blast are swarming around Earth. The radiation storm, in progress, ranks "S1" on NOAA space weather scales, which means it poses no serious threat to satellites or astronauts. This could change if the storm continues to intensify. Stay tuned. cough. if storm intensifys. Were gonna get hit full in the face with a pretty big cme. cough. |

AURORA WATCH: Earth remains inside a solar wind stream flowing from a large coronal hole on the Sun. Although geomagnetic activity was low on April 11th, sky watchers should continue to be alert for auroras. The best viewing sites will be at high latitudes: e.g., New Zealand, southern Australia, northern Europe, Canada, Alaska and other northern US states like Wisconsin and Michigan ... and, of course, the ISS. Right: These colorful auroras appeared over Menominee, Michigan, just before sunrise on April 10th. Photo credit: Duane Clausen. SOLAR TEA CUP: The Sun briefly resembled a tea cup on April 11th when a giant magnetic loop erupted over the star's western limb. Astronomers call such handle-like structures prominences. This one, photographed by the orbiting Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), spanned about 35 Earth-diameters from the base to the top of the loop. |
