Big sunspot AR1520 unleashed an X1.4-class solar flare on July 12th at 1653 UT. Because the sunspot was directly facing Earth at the time of the blast, this is a geoeffective event. <<LOOK`n thru YOU>> (OP) User ID: 1528083 United States 07/12/2012 02:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It was a double hit by CME`s that created most of the damage during the Carrington event.. From August 28, 1859, until September 2, numerous sunspots and solar flares were observed on the sun. Just before noon on September 1, the British astronomer Richard Carrington observed the largest flare,[3] which caused a massive coronal mass ejection (CME) to travel directly toward Earth, taking 17 hours. This is remarkable because such a journey normally takes three to four days. This second CME moved so quickly because the first one had cleared the way of the ambient solar wind plasma.[3] [link to en.wikipedia.org] Last Edited by <<LOOK`n thru YOU>> on 07/12/2012 02:13 PM |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 19624069 United States 07/12/2012 02:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Mhaw, a hundred years ago we didn't even now the existence of flares. So, what can be the doom? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3855746 Google-- carrington event I know about that event. But I do know either that "they" know about this possibilty and that "they" are working on it for years now. In big networks there are solutions implemented. The Carrington Event On the morning of September 1, 1859, amateur astrologer Richard Carrington ascended into the private observatory attached to his country estate outside of London. After cranking open the dome’s shutter to reveal the clear blue sky, he pointed his brass telescope toward the sun and began to sketch a cluster of enormous dark spots that freckled its surface. Suddenly, Carrington spotted what he described as “two patches of intensely bright and white light” erupting from the sunspots. Five minutes later the fireballs vanished, but within hours their impact would be felt across the globe. That night, telegraph communications around the world began to fail; there were reports of sparks showering from telegraph machines, shocking operators and setting papers ablaze. All over the planet, colorful auroras illuminated the nighttime skies, glowing so brightly that birds began to chirp and laborers started their daily chores, believing the sun had begun rising. Some thought the end of the world was at hand, but Carrington’s naked eyes had spotted the true cause for the bizarre happenings: a massive solar flare with the energy of 10 billion atomic bombs. The flare spewed electrified gas and subatomic particles toward Earth, and the resulting geomagnetic storm—dubbed the “Carrington Event”—was the largest on record to have struck the planet. Bright Flare, Dark Lines Compared to today’s information superhighway, the telegraph system in 1859 may have been a mere dirt road, but the “Victorian Internet” was also a critical means of transmitting news, sending private messages and engaging in commerce. Telegraph operators in the United States had observed local interruptions due to thunderstorms and northern lights before, but they never experienced a global disturbance like the one-two punch they received in the waning days of summer in 1859. |

Quoting: Epic Beard Guy Anyone that doesn't know about the Carrinton event probably isn't smart enough to Google anything. Smart people do no that solutions are implemented... I am interested to hear what you know about "solutions" for a cme taking out the grid. CMES do not take out grids. they are not x flares. The carrington event was not a cme, it was a huge x flare. Surprised that you would say that nip I thought you would know that its not the size of the flare that really matters. A cme is what brings the charged particles which in turn can knock out the electrical systems. |
