Help with all this solar flare talk
Can someone please explain in very simple english what does all this "X-Class" "1.4" stuff really mean to the average person. I see this is hitting the mainstream press today but I am clueless on this.

It means nothing unless you live up north where you can see auroras.

not really...

A Solar Flare and CME are NOT the same.
A Solar Flare is Light, A CME is Mass!
A Flare travels at the speed of light
A CME travels at the speed of ejection

A solar Flare is a eruption of intense high-energy radiation from the sun's surface and reaches Earth very fast, in around 8 minutes.
The levels of Flare strength are A, B, C, M and X (in order of weakest to strongest)

Solar Flare
:flare1389b::flare1389b:

A CME (coronal mass ejection) is an ejection of material from the solar corona, usually observed with a white-light coronagraph. A CME may or may not be produced by the sunspot explosion. If it does produce a CME, it takes anywhere from 2 to 3 days to reach Earth, and sometimes even longer

Thank you both for your input, just see all this "doom" and just was wanting to know. So what is with the "1.4" scale?

well,

the solar flare rating system is based on five lettered classes, each of which is ten times more powerful than the one before. Within each class are numbered divisions so a flare could be called "X 1.4" , for example

I would be more interested in Sol going quadropolic or whatever you call it...

In May the Sun started to split into FOUR SEPARATE POLES.

That's some shit right there, two norths, two souths, ONE SUN.

Crazy.

What many worry about OP, is a huge CME from a possible X45 type flare that would take down the electric grid. The size of the flare doesn't always matter (which makes it even more confusing), and no one knows for sure how big it would need to be to make a CME large enough to damage the world's grid.

Utter nonsense,IWTB laid it out for you in such a way that a Kitten may understand it.

I am sure that, although you did'nt/don't want to,IWTBs' explanation will have helped many - Good work IWTB.

Now,if you don't want to learn about the subject then why even enquire?

If you are just a Child,I apologize if I came across harsh but if not,

Enjoy Coke.

As well a CME would not have to be that massive to cause major dispution,if at the time of arrival our Magnetosphere was not in a good shape at all then there is all the more chance that the Energies from the event make their way down through to the Earths' Troposphere(first Atmosphere)which in turn could help overload the Power Grids that supply all of our Modern Lives.

But what W.A says is just as relevant.

The doom though is not the sole reason why we Solers' post..we also like to teach and learn through one-another.

The TV in the Sky will still be there when the TV in the corner of Mans' Cave has been fried,so remembering what always is will be handy should the need arise.

Re: Help with all this solar flare talk
Go to space weather.com right now and everyday for your weather report and you will get it. C, M, X, is the slale and x being the biggest. Cme is what happens when theres a flare that heads out in what ever direction it was sent from. Remember the sun is round so its all about the angles. Protons is how active it is. 1 and up. Anything over 10 stars to bar bq our atmosphere and so on. Just go to the web site. There's a real cool picture up right now of what just happened.
