I am not saying the prison system can "fix" him. I just think 162 yrs for a first time teenage offender is excessive. All teenagers do stupid things, and I think someone's environment has a huge effect on how far someone goes in their rebellion stage.

Like I said, the actions are inexcusable, but I think that's too harsh.

The dude should have thought of that before he went on his crime spree.

That's my point. Teenagers don't think about stuff like that. An adult would, a mature person with responsibility would, but teenagers do not.

We all did some stupid shit, but this is REALLY STUPID SHIT.

I agree, and he should be punished. I just think life in prison is a bit much.

But, I'm not the judge, or a judge at all so it's not my place to say what his punishment should be. It is what it is.

How many people did you rob with a gun, threaten to kill, have a shootout in a burger joint? Exactly.

I had a friend growing up - he was drinking one night with some friends and they ran out of beer. Being stupid, he grabbed a squirt gun and started knocking on doors in the neighborhood "asking for money or they got the squirts". Dude got 15-18 years for attempted robbery at the age of 17 (and he's WHITE). I think anyone robbing with a real/loaded gun, multiple occassions, and actually firing the weapon deserves a minimum of 25 years to sit and think about it. MINIMUM

I hear ya, but the main reason I think it is too harsh is because he is a child. He doesn't even fully understand the world or the full consequences of his actions. I think most people tend to not understand how hard people work for their property until they themselves have worked hard for something. I tend to think people are not mature until 25ish. 162 years is harsh, something like 5-10 years would have been fair, as I believe there is a chance he can be rehibilitated.
 Quoting: Hawk-02

goaway Prison rehabilitates NO ONE... It's there for punishment! Perhaps the sentance is too long and they'd be just as well off putting him to death, but this "KID" sure seems like a thug to me (anyone using their gun in a threatening manner to rob/scare, stating they'd "KILL" over and over?) Dude was on a power trip due to a gun and is probably the only one of his "homeboys" that felt they could fight the charges rather than plead out. He said they didn't offer him a plea like the others - did the others fire weapons, did the others act like they'd have no remorse for killing?
 Quoting: 2k3Mach

That is probably it. The judge saw no remorse.

How is it that the people who are most in favor of liberty and justice are the first to stand up and applaud an abuse of our legal system by the courts. Cruel and unusual doesn't come close to describing the situation this young man who is medically diagnosed bipolar is in.
It is not the punishment that is disconcerting it's the rationalization of it.
Soon we will see these kind of sentences for tax evasion or carrying an unconcealed weapon without a liscence if we continue to allow this punitive mindset to persevere.

This asshole should get the book thrown at him, but no free society would stoop this low.

While this shit still happens none of us are free... Eventually court decisions such as this will become the norm and we'll all be doing year-long bids for speeding tickets and be in debt to the state.

Lafayette, IN - yes, serious! He was a good kid, he then spent 14 years in prison and was released on parole and is now back in prison. Once he was out he was a totally different person - worse than he went in, much worse, hit the drugs real hard. It was stupid, he got the door slammed in his face at a couple houses, then another one called the cops on him and they caught him a couple houses down at their door! They got him for armed robbery and multiple counts of attempted armed robbery (this was all neighbors of his within 1-2 blocks of his house and it was just stupid funny drunken shit he did).

Florida laws are no joke when it comes to gun crimes.

- Mandates a minimum 10 year prison term for certain felonies, or attempted felonies in which the offender possesses a firearm or destructive device

- Mandates a minimum 20 year prison term when the firearm is discharged

- Mandates a minimum 25 years to LIFE if someone is injured or killed

- Mandates a minimum 3 year prison term for possession of a firearm by a felon

- Mandates that the minimum prison term is to be served consecutively to any other term of imprisonment imposed
