YES, this has been bothering me for serveral months aswell.
It seems to be mostly from Computer grads of any type. The real problem is they respond in this manner like they are starting out a statment, but after being ask a question, go look up any game Dev Q and A and Promise you will see this ever sentence.

Re: So, What's up with people starting every sentence with the word "so"?
I've been doing a lot of recorded interviews lately and when editing them I've found I almost always start my next question with "So...." So (there I go again) I've been deleting them as much as I can, and now I try to leave a pause in my own sentences when I would otherwise be saying "So...."

In the same way I now try to leave a pause when I would otherwise have said ("you know..." and "actually...." and "errr...."

So there are a lot of pauses in my sentences. And there I go again.

An American friend told me recently that we English tend to end our sentences with a question, don't we. Like that, don't we. And Americans don't, do you.

He's right, too, isn't he.

Re: So, What's up with people starting every sentence with the word "so"?
If used excessively it's a verbal habit. When it's used sparingly I take it to mean "putting all previous discussions aside, I'm starting a new topic."

A gal I work with says "you know what I mean" after nearly every statement. I don't think she really means to say that it's just a signature habit she has, but it drives me bonkers. Most people don't notice it.

The best way to deal with that is to say "yes" after every time she asks if you know what she means. Actually it won't to anything to curtail her usage of the phrase, but it will be entertaining for you.

Using "so" to start a sentence, when it's not being logically connected to an idea that was introduced in a previous sentence is extremely irritating. It is definitely a trend, and I'm not sure why it started since it makes no sense. It perpetuates because people hear other people doing it, and then they do it.

I noticed it most recently watching the trendy folks at the food network trying to decide who would be their next "star" to have a season of shows before being cancelled.

So, the person to be elimanted today is..."

So, I think you did a lot better with...

So, the winner of today's challenge is...

The meaning of the sentence isn't changed at all because of the word "so."

"So" doesn't belong there, so don't say it.5a

I've noticed this more and more lately, especially listening to interviews on the radio. It seems to be more prevalent among 20 somethings, especially recent college grads.

Anybody else notice this?

Well.. this is a deep subject.

Re: So, What's up with people starting every sentence with the word "so"?
this has been driving me insane! i listen to lots of talk radio, and it seems to be a new phenomenon. the first time i noticed it, i actually thought, "this makes the talker sound kind of smart, like their mind is always working, and their sentences are just glimpses into that perpetual thinking machine". but then i heard it again. and again. and again. and again....now it just sounds like an annoyingly self-important way of speaking. as though everything they have to say is so brilliant and entertaining that they can just casually ease into their sentences with obnoxious nonchalance. for a while i decided to turn off the radio every time i heard one of these "so talkers", no matter how much i was interested in the content of their interview. then, i started keeping the radio on, just to see if the obnoxious jerk would actually start every single answer with "so..". like a drinking game. but really i wish we could put a stop to it, like to call our favorite radio shows and ask them to prep their guests by saying, "please refrain from beginning every answer with the word "so", it's really bothering our audience members. hopefully it will just fade out of style.

Another overused phrase is "with all due respect ... " and then they go on to be disrespectful.

I work with a woman that does this. She also uses "so" like a comma - I want to smack her with a rolled up newspaper.

That's because in their opinion no respect is due, that's the point of that statement.

Darth Vader started this trend ages ago. Who was going to correct him?:

When the word 'so' is the first word in a sentence, it is an atitude indicator. It implies a contrarian attitude toward the topic about to be introduced.

I believe the habit is due to the writing for television. Notice that whenever a new scene is introduced you are being thrust into a supposed ongoing situation/conversation. People see this over and over and have now been programmed!cool2

The "err" or "eum" at the first of the sentence is a dead giveaway that the speaker has a history of speaking into a microphone with voice operated transmit.
Too old to care, but I do.
