So, What's up with people starting every sentence with the word "so"?

I noticed a lot of people also start sentences off with "I mean". It's fucking annoying. Sometimes I wanna yell at them "I know what you fucking mean, so stop saying I mean when you begin a sentence."

I have noticed that many end with the word 'so'

I hate people who use "much" sarcastically because they think it's witty. Such as, "jealous much?"

I prefer to start mine with "Well,"

But readily admit they are all annoying.

Blocking – Interruption of train of speech before completion. e.g. "Am I early?" "No, you're just about on..."(silence) At an extreme degree, after blocking occurs, the speaker does not recall the topic he or she was discussing.

It's a symptom of Thought Disorder - i.e. the DSM's guideline on how to detect someone who is able to think outside of the box.

I think it has replaced the word "like" from the generation X.

I blame Jerry Seinfeld: he was a prolific user of initiating most sentences with "So...". It's annoying because people somehow think it's kind of sophisticated, witty and authorative to assume the "if this, then that" construct, which "so" elicits.

Essentially people who use "So" are snakeoil salesmen types: it's an attempt to gain a sub-conscious upper hand, as it presupposes that what they are about to say must be right, must be listened to, and can't be refuted.

Far worse are those who insert "um" all over the place or "like" - drives me bats!

I've been wondering for a few years why people use the word 'actually' incorrectly and excessively. It's like an "I am a raving idiot that has no common sense" flag.

I have come to write peops off as morans as soon as a compulsive actually flies out of their noise hole. I notice people type it out too, even worse.

It helped me to stop listening to NPR.

If used excessively it's a verbal habit. When it's used sparingly I take it to mean "putting all previous discussions aside, I'm starting a new topic."

A gal I work with says "you know what I mean" after nearly every statement. I don't think she really means to say that it's just a signature habit she has, but it drives me bonkers. Most people don't notice it.

The only people that seem to find it necessary to point out grammatical errors, are narcissists.
