Solar EMP is only a big deal for long transmission lines.
No issue for cars or electronics. Although things plugged in to AC could be effected by surges and brown outs.

you cant totaly shield stuff from a emp, or the device= phone, satalite, F-15, would be unfuctional a lead-box and lead boxes dont fly very well. Lead paint works a little but you cant realy find it any more. Gold would work but i dont got the money for that. im gona go put my tin foil hat on

I'm thinking they've had enough warning to get satellites out of the way or shut down and for electric companies to do whatever they do to prepare for these things.


Having the electricity knocked out is just an inconvenience and we've all been through that. I just hope that everyone behaves like the eastern blackout we had a while back.

The question I have is how strong of a CME will it need to be to really spell doom - where it not only knocks out electricity but also the electronics that run it? plus all of our electronics?

Uhm...yeah - they most definitely have the satellites out of harms way. That's SOP for this stuff.

But if you want to question my comment about the electric companies being able to prepare - I'm just assuming that they have some level of CME protection since it's a known threat. Maybe they have nothing?

I know that CME's have knocked the power grid before - it's been a good while though. My mom remembers one in the late 40's or early 50's. And there was one in the late 1800's that took out the telegraphs.

I would think that if a really major one that was going to saturate the ionsphere was coming - the government would already be mobilizing to get water and food supplies to designated points and emergency shelters would be setting up. Just like they do when a heat wave or hurricane is coming. So I'm not worried about this one.

I don't mean to sound like a smart ass, however I remember the govt. when Katrina hit and I don't think you should count on them for your life needs. They may take you to the concentration oops I mean Fema camp to save you though.

Well...Katrina was a bit of a cluster. But let's not forget - Katrina was well past NOLA when the real flooding happened. The hurricane prep went well and had it just remained hurricane damage, we wouldn't have had a problem. IT was the "unforeseen" failure of the dikes that caused the trouble.


In general though, the various levels of government + charities are pretty quick on the scene of natural disasters. And they do get the supplies to the staging areas ahead of the hurricanes.

So I do think if a CME had a damned good chance of knocking out the power - emergency responders would already be in action. The only question would be is it well planned and enough? And since I didn't see any activity over at city hall earlier...and I don't see any warnings from phone or cable company...and no email from the electric company - I'm not at all worried about this CME. ;o)

Well reassured the government once again looks out for its own... LOL They never passed the Shield Bill, which was a fairly inexpensive way to help protect our grids. They are too busy fighting over whether or not CME's really do anything.
