Sacred Cow or Golden Calf?

Many concerned parents today refuse to vaccinate their children; they fear the vaccinations more than the diseases and a growing number of professionals are feeling the same way.

As pediatrician Robert Mendelsohn, MD wrote: "Much of what you have been led to believe about immunizations simply isn't true. I not only have grave misgivings about them, if I were to follow my deep convictions…I would urge you to reject all inoculations for your child."(1)

Jane Orient, MD, representing the Association of Physicians and Surgeons in an address at the US House of Representatives (June 14, 1999) said this: For most children, the risk of a serious vaccine reaction may be 100 times greater than the risk of hepatitis B…. Asthma and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus…have nearly doubled in incidence since the introduction of many new, mandatory vaccines…[as have the] huge increase in reports of autism and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder….(2)

Have Vaccinations Eradicated Disease?

Infectious diseases began to decline long before the advent of vaccinations: "Actual statistics and records from around the world show that…smallpox, diphtheria, whooping cough, scarlet fever, etc., began to disappear long before immunizations ever came on the scene."(3)

The combined death rate from scarlet fever, diphtheria, whooping cough and measles among children up to fifteen shows that nearly 90% of the total decline in mortality between 1860 and 1965 occurred before the introduction of antibiotics and widespread immunization.(4)
