Are you a Dim, Gimme or Ghost? : 1995 Star Trek episode set in 2024 - protests, sanctuary districts, etc..
I love Star Trek and have been watching old episodes of Deep Space Nine recently.
[link to www.imdb.com]

Last night I watched an episode in which they were transported back in time to 2024. A year where the world economies are crumbling and citizens are treated like herds of cattle...or sheep rather.

The episode is called Past Tense
Season 3, Episode 11, Past Tense Part 1

Season 3, Episode 12, Past Tense Part 2

In this episode I noticed the following things:
1. People were put into social classes and were given street slang names.
a) Dim: Mentally challenged, handicapped, disabled, overly obese, etc.
b) Gimme: People out of work and looking for a job, an education, healthcare, a house, a family. People with nothing but a lot of need. People who could provide for themselves, if it were available but have been down on luck.. that sort of thing.
c) Ghost: Criminals, armed thugs, gang members, ex-cons, felons.. etc.. People who take what they want.
d) Wealthy: Not given a specific name that I can remember, but definitely shown as a class.
e) Sheeple: Not given a name either but represented as a security gaurd and a processing center worker, who earn mediocre wages, see whats going on, want to help, but have no way to do so. So they accept what they see.

2. Every major city on Earth has one or more "Sanctuary", where gimmes, dims and ghosts are "processed" until they can be found jobs or placed in appropriate facilities. The truth is they are put there and forgotten about. I'm assuming violent and major criminals are put in jails but it is not mentioned.

3. The internet is heavily censored and users have to have a gov't issued log on to access.

4. People in the cities are robbed and mugged more often.

5. The world economies have collapsed.

6. The world is on the brink of something horrible or something that can change them for the better.

Anyway, those are my observations. I thought it was a pretty good episode, but then I love Star Trek and most science fiction.

Let me know what you think!!!

Never got into DS9 much in favor of TNG. Sounds like an interesting plot, going to watch it on Netflix soon.

Haven't seen that episode yet, since I'm not the biggest Star Trek fan. Sounds interesting and very plausible though...Maybe I should give it a watch.

Here is a clip on YouTube with commentary from Ira Behr, one of the screenwriters for Star Trek and DS9, talking about how he came up with the concept for the DS9 episode.

Apparently the Mayor of L.A. at one point was considering a "Haven" area for the homeless?

Here is another clip with more interviews from writers and actors about the episode and it's meaning and comparisons to what's going on in the world, Pretty good watch with lots of good clips from the episode.

One of the few pre-season 4 episodes I loved! I went back and rewatched it the other day as well, and it was spooky how little difference there was between the...atmosphere I guess of that episode and reality today.

Your bumping your own thread! That's sort of sad. verysad

Anyway, I love all the Treks (except for Enterprise, haven't seen it yet!).
Star Trek has always made statements about our current society and it's inevitable decay. And how we rebuilt after the wars and became "enlightened". I think every Trekkie secretly wishes for what that show predicts. Not so much the fall, but the rise of something better. No disease, famine, or use of currency. Just peple becoming people again.

BUMP!!

I posted this almost 8 years ago.. 4 years to go. I feel like what we are seeing now are similar to the Bell Riots mentioned in the episode.

I've also noticed the "gimme" term being used a lot more.

Hopefully this will all boil over in the coming years and turn into something great like it does in Star Trek.
