The caloric requirements for a family of four for two months:
Based upon a higher than normal amount of work and having fudge factor ( a high estimation given children could be younger)

2500 calories x 4 people x 60 day minimum =600,000 calories

While anyone who is altruistic or spiritual or both would like to provide for a community, it's not realistically possible.

Few people on the frontier could have made it alone. The mass movement out West succeeded as a result of specialization, but all of them had basic agrarian and hunting/gathering skills. Few societies can live without teachers, healers, craftsmen (like wheelwrights or blacksmiths), soldiers, artisans, spiritual leaders, etc.

This means after a bad scenario, then the community will come back together by necessity in order to improve security, repel invaders, and food and water sources.

A long long time ago, in the US rather than have food stamps, the government had a commodities program, and surplus food produced by farming operations(many family owned) was purchased in bulk and this was distributed to the impoverished. It would be entirely possible and beneficial for our society to do something like that versus food stamps (now electronic transfers). That money goes to corporations, many of whom purchase those food items from world wide suppliers.

I can easily see in the event of an emergency, a return to large scale farming operations in order to feed people, a chilling idea that the former USSR tried to implement. Such agricultural "camps" might occur in the aftermath. It's entirely plausible. Governmental intervention is always terrible.
