The Secret of the Ooze


The writers did some sneaky things in this movie.

The first hint is during the intro fight scene in the department store.

Michelangelo grabs some sausage-links to use as nunchukus, and yells "THE MISSING LINK!!!" in a reference to the supposed missing link fossil that would complete the evolutionist fantasy of an Ape to Human transition. This is a tip-off of the Evolution religion theme running throughout the movie.


So later on on Splinter sees the TV Newscast about the research institution T.G.R.I. involved in hazardous toxic waste spills.. and afterwards he calls the turtles up to the roof to tell them something important.


So, to backtrack a little: the story of how the turtles became mutants: they were normal turtles in a sewer and walked into some green ooze, that was actually "Mutagen", and it transformed them into giant mutant turtles that could talk. This origin story in itself is a nod to the "Abiogenesis" fairy-tale of life on earth springing out of some slime that got struck by lightning or whatever other foolish variations.


Back to Splinter on the roof: He reveals to the turtles the canister which contained the mutagen ooze. On it is the label of T.G.R.I. It is explained that the ooze was nothing more than an accidental spill that got flushed into a sewer.

Here is a major parallel to the real-world "Evolution" narrative and its psychological implications...

Upon hearing Splinter's news, Donatello (one of the turtles)
becomes extremely distraught, as he realizes his origin is nothing more than a random chemical accident.. He says "I always thought there was some purpose behind it all..."

This is like humans who believe in their divine origination from the creator, being told by academics (Rats) that they actually came from slime billions of years ago.

Splinter consoles Donatello saying "Do not confuse the specter of your origin with your present self-worth." Basically saying.. it doesn't matter where you came from, you're special just the way you are. In other words "you are all that matters."

This is a sly way to slip the Evolution religion into a children's movie, and get them to vicariously accept the doctrine by vicariously experiencing it through the ninja turtles. "You have no purpose, you came from slime."


There's some other stuff, too.. like the Scientist character who marvels at the natural mutation of the turtles, kind of emphasizing how Naturalists get all excited over the imagined idea that they came from pond scum.
