Floridians say they want Stand Your Ground law to stay
When 28-year-old George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin and argued the Stand Your Ground law, saying he was protecting himself, the application of the law came under question and scrutiny. Despite the controversy, though, most Floridians say they think the law shouldn't be changed.

According to a Tampa Bay Times, Bay News 9 exclusive statewide poll, 64 percent of registered voters said they support the law, and even almost half of those who say they oppose it say they would really just like to see it modified. Only 18 percent of those polled said they want to see the law repealed.

The law, which was passed in 2005, says a person is justified to use deadly force to defend himself/herselt if he/she reasonably believes such force is necessary to prevent imminent death, great bodily harm or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.

A citizen has no duty to retreat, and if it is determined that the use of force was justified, he/she is immune from criminal prosecution and civil action. The Stand Your Ground law does not apply if the victim initially provokes the use of force of if used in a felony crime.

We wouldn't NEED this law if we were an OPEN CARRY state. Maybe that's what we oughta go after....

And we wouldn't NEED to be an OPEN CARRY state if there weren't ASSHOLES wandering around trying to rob and steal and kill.

They should. Not being allowed to "stand your ground" means not being allowed to defend yourself at all no matter whether you use a gun, a knife, a stick, or your bare hands.
"God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787

Exactly.

Why anyone thinks we should be legally required to be a helpless victim is beyond me.

Sector conditioning is 36% complete. 36% of test subjects would rather allow themselves to be victimized and rely on monetary settlements and corporate bureaucracy for justice than to take up their inalienable right to protect their own person with deadly force.

Re: Floridians say they want Stand Your Ground law to stay
Question - Do pens misspell words?

As a Floridian I also want the "Stand your ground" law to stay.

Way too many ppl have made up their mind about Zimmerman and Travon based on what they hear on the news. Let the legal process work its way through first. I know our legal system is not perfect, I've had first hand experiance. But ppl are way too quick to judge someone or something without all the facts.

Personally,if Zimmermans account of what happened is true, then he's innocent. Regardless of how many times Travons lawyers go on TV and say Zimmerman chased down a kid and shot him in the heart. If that "kid" was over six feet tall, wasnt chased but followed, and if the "kid" was the first to throw a punch and was acctually pounding his head into the sidewalk. I dont care if he was carring skiddles or a bible back from sunday school.

But again, I dont know ALL of the FACTs. So I'll wait to make my final determination.

I also dont think we should have open carry. Although I like the idea in concept, its true that it would just lead to too many issues.

You give the moran bad guys WAY TOO MUCH CREDIT.

Most anyone who criticizes open carry is a blind sheople asshole that knows nothing of "carry", period.

Is that you? If not, my appologies, but, there are very many tactical advantages to open carry, just as there are many tactical advantages to concealed carry.

Is open carry better or is concealed carry better? Making that judgement is simply one step beyond saying NO CARRY IS BETTER.

No man, no law , no government (city state or local) has the moral authority to tell you how to carry. Since they can't protect you and you have that responsibility HOW DARE THEY EVEN BREATH A WORD ABOUT HOW YOU SHOULD CARRY.

Summary: ITS NONE OF YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS HOW I CARRY MY SELF DEFENSE TOOLS.

That being said, I prefer concealed carry at times, open carry others. You people who do carry and attempt to say weshould have laws to prevent open carry are just one step from being like the people that want no carry!!!

Its my life and my safety. HOW FUCKING DARE ANY OF YOU THINK YOU HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO TELL ME HOW I CARRY!

The fact that I carry *CONCEALED* most of the time doesn't make me any less angry.

People need to understand the difference betwee the authority for a government to tell you something and the authority to actually enforce it. Most of you lame brains think its the same. It is not. Crawl back under your rock and go watch your American Idle (Yes "IDLE"...).

Yep, I just wanted to add that I live in Florida too, and that I want all 2nd Amendment rights, including all of our state laws concerning eminent domain and stand your ground to remain in tact.

There are lots of criminals in Florida who are well armed and active, and we shouldnt lose our rights to protect ourselves.

That being said, I live in NW Florida beaches, and violent crime isnt as bad here as it is down south, and I also dont want to scare off tourists because almost all of our crime is residential and mostly drug violence related. The criminals here know not to mess with tourists unless they want 10-20-LIFE, and have to complete 85% of their sentence.

I dont know what happened there, but I think that the media is trying to crucifix Zimmerman, and then I think that the courts will dismiss the charges to try and spark more racial tensions.

My personal opinion is that what happened that night could be aggravated manslaughter which will mean that Zimmerman will serve about 20 years in Florida. 16 years if good behavior.
