We don't know how the cops were knocking, maybe it sounded like they were kicking it in. Why didn't the person use the peep-hole (was there one)? Was it too dark to see who was at the door? Was the person at the door in plain clothes? Lots of details missing. In the end the cops did not announce themselves, the person has a right to defend themselves and someone innocent died.
