Because America was built on rugged individualism and free markets.

I'd say the majority of Americans that actually want to work don't subscribe to the hive mentality.

I'd rather do for myself and take my chances then allow some government agency make decisions for me.

Bottom line for me anyway is that I really don't give a crap about people I don't know personally. I don't care if someone a thousand miles away doesn't have health care, a roof over their head or food to eat. It's really none of my business. I also don't want, or would accept a hand out from a stranger were I to find myself in that situation.
