Syria a western ally? not quite. Assad may be a moderate muslim, but syria is no friend of the USA. In fact, they are in a strategic partnership/alliance with Iran. If we were to attack iran first, syria would have to fight on their side by the agreements they have in place. If we take out syria first, then Iran is backed into a corner.
