Biggest Spike in West Nile Virus Cases Since 2004 Dallas man’s death from West Nile appears to be nation's first this year A Dallas resident who died this month appears to be the nation’s first death related to the West Nile virus this year, Dallas County health officials reported Monday. The victim, an unidentified man in his 60s, lived in ZIP code 75204, near downtown Dallas. Officials provided no other information about him, except to say that he suffered from an underlying health problem. His death could signal the earliest — and possibly the worst — outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease since West Nile first showed up in North Texas in 2002. “These outbreaks move around the country from year to year. It just happens to be in Dallas County this year.” As the officials tried to drive home the seriousness of the situation, they also worried residents might ignore them. A pair of American crows, one in Pleasant Hill and the other in Knightsen, turned up dead, prompting the District to release the following statement: “The risk of West Nile virus is elevated due to several factors," said Deborah Bass, public affairs manager for the District. Biggest Spike in West Nile Virus Cases Since 2004 We had the West Nile scare in Ontario maybe 3-4 years back. My take on it is it hits the bird population hard, as they build up natural immunity. For people, I can only conclude it has some genetic targeting, and is also of concern for persons with ongoing chronic health difficulties (diabetes, heart disease). Somebody should do a study to ascertain what genetic characteristics put healthy people at risk! |

The transferring of the virus happens from bites from what they call Tiger Mosquitoes. They were about the same count of people infected. So, my question is; Is it random or soon we will hear about the "need" to vaccinate against the virus? |
