I think I'm right, here.

Bubonic plague comes from bacteria Y. Pestis, propagates through the lymphatic system (there are lymph nodes under the arm).

Symptoms include abdominal pain, tiny broken blood vessels (which could look like a rash), nausea, vomiting, etc.

But, incubation is longer than 2 days, so he probably came in contact with the bacteria somewhere else on about July 7th, and only got ill on the 9th in California.

It's sad, but also not a huge concern for others unless his family also ends up getting it from being around him. Airborne transmission is bad.

There are some very nasty but relatively rare cases of seriously difficult to treat bacterial infections. Most don't kill that quickly.

The real shock will be if the SHTF and a lack of a supply chain of routine antibiotics and a means of getting them to those that need them.

There are tons of scary scenarios like that.

Yeah, the mortality rate should have been around 15 percent for this kid's demographic.

He must have had it 2 days before symptoms. I think the armpit thing was just a sign that it was in his bloodstream already. Still, very sad.

Good Morning, BB

While I was looking at the West Nile Virus "epidemic" in Texas, that article came across my path.

Sad and mystifying!!! Do you think it had a connection to his swim?

Well, according to this article, the boy didn't go swimming in the lake, nor did he go near the water. ?

Yep, it was incubating in him. I think of how often we parents kind of poo-poo symptoms in our kids, and say "it's probably just the potato salad", etc.

These poor people will live with the freakish reality that this one time it WAS something very serious.

You can never know when the one-in-a-million incident will happen, you just do your best. So sad.

What was originally posted was a "severe bacterial infection", although the parents wondered if he had a flesh-eating bacteria.

Well, there suspicions were correct--posted today:

Tevita Alatini, Texas Boy Who Died On California Vacation, Was Killed By Flesh-Eating Bacteria

A 7-year-old Texas boy who died during a Southern California vacation was killed by flesh-eating bacteria.

The San Diego County medical examiner's office says Tevita Alatini died on July 10 after the infection spread to muscle tissue. The office didn't say how he might have contracted the infection.
