Our Plasma Atmosphere - The Van Allen Belts

The Van Allen radiation belt is a torus of energetic charged particles (plasma) around Earth, which is held in place by Earth's magnetic field. It is thought that most of the particles that form the belts come from solar wind, and other particles by cosmic rays.[1] It is named after its discoverer, James Van Allen, and is located in the inner region of the Earth's magnetosphere. It is split into two distinct belts, with energetic electrons forming the outer belt and a combination of protons and electrons forming the inner belts. In addition, the radiation belts contain lesser amounts of other nuclei, such as alpha particles. The belts pose a hazard to satellites, which must protect their sensitive components with adequate shielding if their orbit spends significant time in the radiation belts.

I wonder if you might comment (if it's worth commenting) on the recent uptick in electrical storms' intensity. Many places on Earth seem to be receiving unusually strong severe weather. I have been reading comments online about lightning being louder, brighter, long-lasting, and I have even seen videos of more and more upward lightning strikes (earth-originating).



Is the surface of the Earth becoming more electrically charged than previous years and what other effects could we look to for evidence?

Other than noctilucent clouds, of course, which are being observed for longer than their season and lower in latitude on a daily basis now!

Also, spaceweather.com has been running a feature on their front page about noctilucent clouds and they are trying to blame it on global warming! HA! Laughable!

Finally, have you heard about the Radiation Belt Storms Probe (RBSP) NASA is launching in August? It seems like a fascinating mission that will only put another nail in the coffin of the gravity-centric, electrically-neutral cosmology model. I wonder if your team could publish a few predictions for this one. I'll start: a direct connection could be discovered between the Sun and the Earth that is nearly realtime and the charge from the Sun entering the Van Allen Belts is transferred to the surface of the planet almost as quickly. If NASA is open and honest (they're not), this could eliminate the speed of light speed limit set in place for the whole universe. Also, maybe a magnetic/electrical footprint of the moon might be observed?

Review Status: The RBSP mission has successfully completed their Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR) and System Integration Review (SIR) reviews. The Project is expected to come in on cost and schedule. The Operational Readiness Review (ORR) is scheduled for February 2012 and the Launch is schedule for May 2012 (updated 1/21/11).
