Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Bought 2 KG of fine sea salt.

Worth its wight in gold one day.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16802160

Yup. Salt, pepper, spices, all are a good idea.
When the stores are closed you'll be in good shape for barter.
I have 50 lbs of brown unrefined salt from the farm srore.
It also has the trace elements that ae a big part of good health. A whole lot cheaper, I think it was $20.
 Quoting: HnryBwmn

Salt is the real deal in prepping.

Once over-the-road shipping comes to a stop, people will find that they can grow/hunt their own food and dig wells for their own water, but they are fucked when it comes to procuring their own salt. As mankind's civilizations advanced away from the seashores and into the interiors of the continents, we never traveled any farther from a salt source than commerse and trade could bridge the gap. Once commerse and trade come to a stop, people will start dying of salt deprivation.

Everyone knows that:
You can't go more than three minutes without air.
You can't go more than three days without water.
You can't go more than three weeks without food.

But few realize that you can't go more than ONE week without salt.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 20969552

I'm working on a posting about this very subject, both from a human need for nutrition, for preserving food, and for barter post shtf.

In the interim while I prepare that article, one thing that all people should do is search google books for their state plus salt licks.

For example, in Missouri, salt licks were found and utilized in Howard County at Boone Lick. From there, an operation was developed and then shipped, probably via flatboats down river.

See:
[link to books.google.com]

There are several options, but rather than going into the methods of harvesting salt (and there are several), I'll be posting them over at my regular section in a few days.

It would be very wise to both have salt on hand and also to know where you might be able to acquire it later. Realize that salt has iodine in it too in order to prevent goiters. Iodine keeps the thyroid operating properly. Post-45, many people become hyper and then settle out hypothyroid. In a collapse without iodine sources (now from salt), then you'd see these conditions again in YOUNG people.

What little salt you had, you wouldn't ever trade it away, as it's very difficult to acquire.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10689495

Thanks for that link to the book. I didn't realize there were sources of salt in Missouri.

Just wondering if the OP has ever considered the fact that The Powers That Suck have taken note of everything he's done, and all of that effort will come to naught, in an instant. A prime candidate for a black bagging.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Henry,

There were many sources of salt within all of the states. I'd wager that in my own state there were more than 40 places.

Of course salt can be procured from the sea, but the pioneers found that it produces a small yield given the amount of work needed to extract it by removing the water by heating it. However there are many Asian nations who have successfully used this as their primary method.

The First People noticed that wild game flocked to mineral licks that contained sodium chloride (salt) among other similar salts like potassium chloride. As a result they used these areas for trapping. Settlers utilized these areas too and gathered both game and salt in abundance.

Of course some desert areas contain high salinity. Tribesmen would come to those areas and simple place the packed material in containers, rinse it out, and what was left was salt. Then they used that as currency that was accepted anywhere.

Salt can be mined, though of course it was the worst possible job. Some salt is now commercially mined in various places. See this map:
[link to www.mortonsalt.com]

Hickory roots naturally extract salt from the ground, so by boiling the roots, you can add a salty flavor.

Obviously it's been a practice to utilize all parts of an animal rather than waste it, even using the congealed blood for sausage. This would be a practical means for getting salt, but of course is precluded from use by anyone whose spiritual practices forbid it, either if those animals are forbidden by their sects, the animals haven't been blessed, or say Jehovah's Witnesses' restrictions on bringing in blood into their bodies.

Those by the sea have much better choices as they're going to get whopping doses of salt, but also iodine. Most of that comes from seafood or even from sea vegetables like seaweed or kelp. Dairy provides a little, but there will be few people will dairy producing livestock in a collapse.

Salt as sodium chloride is ionic which means it the chemical bond is easily broken by the addition of water. This sodium is used to power the sodium/potassium pump, which attempts to remove sodium from cells and bring potassium in.
[link to en.wikipedia.org]

The minimum daily requirement for salt is 500 mg though many recommend 1500 mg. While salt consumption is huge in a Western diet, in a survival situation that number would dwindle rapidly.

The primary reason for reducing salt is to lower blood pressure. Really this will be less and less of an issue if people are working hard, having far less body mass index, and eating less. Truthfully those on low salt diets might die from a suddenly lack of availability of blood pressure medicines and diuretics.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
I should be getting a comparative break today. tha garden is pretty well picked. Corn is finished except for maybe 40-50 small ears I'll let continue to grow.
Feed for deer and horses if they don't make ears.

Bell peppers are cleaned off for now. Many small peppers that need to grow. The bananas are still abundant but all the large were picked a few days ago.
Cantelope, picked a few, I'm sure there are some waiting on me.

Flea market today. I might get into radios and a freind has an AR that's misfiring he's suposed to bring over later for me to check.

An easy day comparatively. Temps should be 5-10 less than we've been getting. 90-95.
Worked up 3 bushel of corn and the last 1 1/2 bushel of peppers picked about 5 days ago.
Made 21 pints and 5 quarts of canned corn.
Fukk whut alot of work.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
I'm praying for all of you and for myself in corporate worship with like minded believers. Despite the signs and symptoms of our civilizations, there is beauty and hope.

Prepping is about skills learned, so much so that they become the fabric of our being. No one can know them all. All of us can learn some.

Even if challenged by circumstances, the members of a tribe can pull together. This synergistic effect embraces differences and is tolerant of them.

We live together in a covenant relationship with each other and God. Real love doesn't force anyone to do anything. That's rape. Real love comes freely in reciprocity because mentally balanced folks want to return affection and caring.

Some people will falter. They won't prepare and won't help themselves. We have to be at peace with that.

Today, I am praying for all of you to prepare and learn new skills, hone old ones, and be willing to listen to wise older experienced people.

These old ones will surely die if there is a collapse, and their knowledge and wisdom will pass from this world. We owe it to them and to ourselves to work as communities. Perhaps that will mean repelling evil, but most likely it will mean ridding the evil within ourselves. The mote in another's eye is so very small, but the log within our own is so very large.

Peace to you this day.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10689495

True. I prep and many times people ask what are you prepping g for. The bible tells us what to prep for.
And the many visionaries tell us what will come first and next.
When you think about it, we can prep to the best of our ability, but what it comes down to is that only God can save us.

Gun show today. Going to try and sell an AR-15 that I bought 3 months ago. I wanted 1 in 7 twist barrel, man lied to me said I was buying a Black Rain 1/8 twist which I could have lived with.
It's not, it is 1 in 9. I shoot heavy bullets in .556 caliber so I'm looking for that.
A 1 in 9 is for light bullets which I have 0 of.

Didn't sell the AR.
Lots of tire kickers, few with money.

Got alot of good leads for things I want though......

855A1s are no longer available. Gubmint pulled them. Dangit.

Didn't see any $80 kegs of pulldown powder that WERE available at last show. Not one.
Definately a buyers market for a change because of fewer buyers with money.

8 CBs check out and have been tuned up.
2 small Cobras put out 20 watts......
Couple old radios go up to 25-35 watts......good deal.
The 2 small Cobras will go to the quad. One mounted, one for spare, in the storage compartment.
Need to get the one mounted and a cable made up for the antenna and strapped to the bike.
Drying another 1/2 bushel of peppers. Going out to pick a bushel or so of tomatoes and do some canning today.

Thank for that.
I spent 4 hours in a tree stand today. Nuttin.

Picked up 2 kegs of virgin .556 powder last gun show. 500 API at 62 gr and 500 LC brass.

2 older whip antennas with springs and bases for $2 each yesterday at the flea market. 50 quart jars for $15.

Talked to my Omish freind about greenhuse stuff and when to start seedlings after the first.
Maters Jan 1 and peppers in June.

Got a newer bow set up and went over 30 arrows with new fletching and straightened.
Re-sharpened 30 year old 5 blade stainless 145 gr. Broadheads, Razorback 5's, wish I had more. Much stronger than the chinese junk from Wal-E world. One of those broke 2 blades screwing a tip into an arrow.........
I'll be out first day of gun season Saturday.
Should have one canned already. Dammit. Worked out of town for the first month of bowseason when it's a whole lot easier.

He was an 8 last year. Should be large 8 or maybe up to 10. Got a pretty good look last time he ran from me.
that's actually pretty good for around here.
Deer in this area are small. It's rare to see a 12 or better. Back in the middle of Kansas I hunted a 28 point that always outsmarted me.
Lots of salt and minerals in the soil there. Lots more crops too.
Mostly oak forest around here.
Found both of his antlers from last year. Small 8.
Spent 3 half days this week. No sign other than his scrapes.
Not so bold after getting a 300 grain .44 off his nose last week.
