Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Hey Henry, I was discussing the process of canning with a man who claimed that he cans all of his food using the hot bath method. He claimed that the new type of seals within the jar lids made the pressure cooker obsolete, because they no longer need the high amounts of pressure to seal.

Does this information ring true with you?
 Quoting: institutionalized

Never heard that.
My experience last year with venison, either alone or with tomatoes and peppers was interesting.
Meats need 90 minutes at 15#.....that's alot.
Venison, raw meat I think should be thoroughly cooked.
Peppers are a bit like green beens, they tend to gat sal manila, I think if undercooked.

I found many lids had buckled....cheap ass chinese fuggers. It would appear that they have gone to a thinner gauge metal....Saves what, 1/10 of a penny per lid?
AZZholes.
Edit to add: all jars did seal with no issues. Haven't found any that have lost seal either. Rinkled lids were disturbing to see however.
Now, My stuff was thoroughly cooked already. In giant pots as I mix my spices and all the peppers and maters.
So I did a couple of my last batches at 10# and I think 40 minutes.
Don't trust my memory though, it sucks.....go with what your canning book says.

I have re-used lids from previous years with good success.
I've been thinking that you could use maybe red silicone, in a SHTF situation where you have no new lids available.
Edit: I think smear with a finger a thin bead over the old seal, let set up 24 hours. Should work perfectly.
Again though, I assume no responsibilty for you getting sick.
I suggest you buy as many lids as you can afford. Jars too......

As far as not needing a pressure cooker any more because THE SHITTY THINNER CRAPPY IN EVERY WAY KINESE lids have a better rubber on them........I would be very skeptical.

I'l stick with my fleat of pressure cookers, thank you.
It's way too much labor to get a buck into a jar to risk a loss.

If you can find something on the interwebs that convinces you, go for it.

You now have your homework.
Go spend the day, document this, either way.....
and come back here and give us a link.
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply.

The advice given to me about jarring, sans pressure cookers appealed to me because It seemed to simplify the whole operation. However, it did seem too good to be true.

I appreciate hearing your opinion on the matter.

Now bear in mind alot of canning CAN be done with just water bath. Again I would take more credence on old canning books than word of mouth.
Incidentaly if you see all the books my fuggin ex took. let me know.
Bitch.

Sorry ladies, pardon my language but it still ticks me off, that was just wrong that those were taken.

Hell I remember using a couple of those books with Nanny, my Great Grandmother. 50 years ago when I was about 4......
It was just totally wrong to take them.

Any recommendations on knives/machetes and sharpeners?
 Quoting: AtheistRepublican

It used to be that whenever we did a turbine job, whether Siemens or GE they gave each Millwright a new sharpening stone.
Years ago they were natural stone. These days they are manmade, kinda shitty.
IF you get one. Bastages are getting to be real tightwads, even to the point it reaches up and bites them in the ass.

Buy at least one good stone. Learn to use it.
Diamond steels are good too.
For a quick edge I like belt sanders. An old tired belt works well.

You will find with years of experience to go slow, light pressure. It takes time and work. The lighter you do the job, switch sides each stroke, the better the edge. If you do it wrong, damgage will be minimum. Angle are most important.

Get somebody with experience to show you. Watch the guy at the gun show that sharpens with belt sander.

Re Knife and Tool Sharpeners
For about $57 you can buy a Spyderco Sharpmaker Knife Sharpener. Now this is one of the very best investments you can ever make. It is idiot proof and can be used to sharpen a variety of tools easily.

Many times people bugger up an edge because it takes some discipline and skill to maintain a constant angle as you sharpen. This tool takes that out of the equation.

Highly recommended. Leaves a very sharp edge with minimal work. It is easy to find.

Sharpening is truly an art in itself.
I know this idiot buggered up alot of edges before I got the hang of it. I usully cheat these days and hit the vertical belt sander.
When I bone out venison however It's using a Kabar and a wet stone to touch up the edge once a while.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Re the Outhouse

Got to make sure in a tribal society that outhouses are made in area that are far away from the well site. Same thing with burial plots and the garden.

I had a link in my topic "Last minute tips for parents when the SHTF" which explained how to best do outhouses. Don't remember if I deleted it. Some Peace Corps volunteers and some missionary societies have been experimenting with better ways of dealing with the solid waste issues for ensuring high enough bacteria activity to digest it, but to eliminate the harmful bacteria too and keep it from leeching into ground water.

There's also usually a chapter on dealing with insects in the outhouse. Seems like much of that is by using screen material in the venting as I recall.

Urine is usually diverted, not mixed in for ideal sanitation and digestion. Urine was then saved for the crops since it's a good fertilizer. Urine is also a mordant, a fixative for pigments in order to dye cloth. That means saving it for this purpose, hence the term "piss pots".

Night soil is a dangerous way to apply solid waste on crops, and sometimes people think you can compost it and then apply it to crops, but I think it's a bad idea.

The very best composted manure comes from rabbits, so often this is a great use for their pellets to keep the compost pile cooking and to lay that down instead in the garden with an end of the season application so that it doesn't tie up nitrogen in the soil as it decays.

Many people use piss to tan animal hides.
If I can't get those 50 gal drums clean enough for potable water that would be a possible use for them.
Used oil saving would be another.

About $40 I think.

I have 3 or 4 someplace.....
Just went out to the shop, hoping that last one I bought was a Gerber, nope, cheapy chinese crap.
Not a bad blade though, almost 14 gauge, stainless, pretty decent sheath. $6......
Still had the paperwork on it.
I don't know about me. I've got weapons all over.....

Time to go hug a rifle.
My woofless neighbors play video games all night....no garden. No jobs. Moving I hope.
I like to start their day at 7 am sharp with my 300 Win mag.
A little late this morning. I'll be back.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
A lot of people assume that a generator will be useful. Personally I doubt it. They are very loud and will attract undue attention.

Why have one? Primarily it's an issue of saving your refrigerator and freeze food. Most likely the best strategy is not to rely heavily upon those kinds of items now, but to switch to more canned based storage. Only fruits can be canned without a pressure cooker.

This means altering the normal way of consuming your food, using up what will spoil first. It's easier to eat it before it spoils than waste it. It might be wiser for neighborhoods to divide it up too rather than it going to waste.

Even if you had one, you could only use it on a very limited basis to briefly power up at odd times, and then ultimately the diesel or gas will run out. I believe that money could be better allocated.

If the SHTF, the time that you use a generator will be very short. You'll adjust when you do things based upon the length of the day and sunlight. Having lots of open flames inside will cause accidental fires by people unused to using candles, so special precautions must be made. It's far better to have a solar panel and a marine deep cycle battery and an inverter to recharge your batteries for long lasting LED lighting. Bring inside rechargeable solar outdoor lights to use them too and save your battery flashlights.

Candles burn inefficiently. Oil lamps burn better, but of course if one tips over, unless it has the safety feature, can cause a terrible fire. Ultimately the paraffin oil will run out and you won't be to fire it. Some people might make vegetable oil lamps, but it's not smart as it would be far better to add that oil to meals for calories and energy than to waste it on unnecessary light for peace of mind. Save all dripping when cooking as well to get more calories per meal.

If its an issue of using the generator to stay warm, well then it won't last. Put everyone in the same room and try to keep that one room warm, but maintain air flow if using combustible material inside as carbon monoxide will bind more easily to hemoglobin than oxygen, and people often will die in their sleep.

It would be very wise to purchase inexpensive 55 gallon or equivalent food grade barrels for water storage given the huge need for water and the seasons when water collection is difficult. You'd fill these up before things get iffy and rotate it and add to it keeping a reservoir. Many water municipalities will run out of water treatment chlorine and no doubt will try to ration it to maintain the supply for a while, but the integrity will decrease.

Sewage systems will fail, and if you live in a low lying area, it could back up into your home. You might have to cap it off.

I've got a couple 50 gal poly drums that had food grade cooking oil in them. Never cleaned them out.
I might put one under one eves trough downspout that "azzhole" took one of the 800 gal water tanks I had from......(they ARE his, he paid for them),
Put some dish soap into the 50 gal drums and let the rain water that's not getting to the other end into another 800 gal tank and let it rinse that for me.......
Need to get them clean and filled.
Thanks for reminding me.

also, been thinking of buildng an out house........

Dangit, my list just keeps growing.

I do have 4 generators. Only one is running though. 2 need minor repairs (my list again) but in the event of needing electrical power would only be used briefly. I do have a little stored fuel, premium no ethanol with added sea foam for long term storage. I would run one only long enough to get everything out of my small freezer and canned.

I'm needing to get after my 12 volt lighting and radio system.....need $$$$ for batteries. Don't have enough.

Just got a propane delivery.
Price is dirt cheap right now. Wish I had more $$, price right now is $1.19 per gallon.......
Also intend to set up one generator on propane.
I think orifice is #56 drill bit?

I need to check that. Of course that is based on size of motor. And all the other variables, I know.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Some tips for when SHTF:
1.Get out of the city.
2.Save up enough food until you get a crop growing.
3.Use ammo sparingly unless you have access to steel(to make your own ammo).
4.Learn to make your own bow and arrows.(if 1 little piece in your firearm broke and it can't be fixed then all your ammo is almost(gunpowder can still be used for making fires and rounds can be used for boobytraps)useless).
5.Learn to make fires without matches.
6.Take an EMT class to learn basic medical care because you will be your own doctor.
7.Knowing how to make a log cabin with just the tools in nature.
8.Find a fresh source of water and know how to boil it to purify it.
9.Canning and storing food for the winter.

This is just a short list but covers most of the basics.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
I think I will always have an infinity for self reliance. My favorite trick is to have on hand a few large rat traps. You can nail these to a tree, bait them, and then set them.

A squirrel will come to feed and get trapped. Dinner time in a stressful survival situation.

This technique, in my opinion, surpasses the classic snare.

So, to get back on topic If I were to have prepped today, it would have been to acquire some rat traps and put them somewhere until I needed them.

I didn't do this today but I did by a good high quality gravity water filter. I also invested in an emergency food kit that came with a cooking pot and utensils and a small cooker. 25 year shelf life

so if we had to we could filter pond water, add too the dehydrated food and cook it, and it is all packed and eady to go.

Don't care for possums myself. I planted fruit trees a good way from the garden area to try to keep them away from my chickens. So far, it's worked.

Love coons and rehab and release them. Have never had a raised one kill a chicken. A few extra seeds at the far end of the garden keeps them happy and preserves the best part of the garden for me.

I'd guess that one purpose of your guns is for providing food for the people that count on you at some point. If everyone harvests out of season, that option won't be available at some point.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
I made peace with my maker, reconnected with an old friend, and fortified my stash of xanax and grain alcohol. SOOOOO much easier, my friend.

I didn't do this today but I did by a good high quality gravity water filter. I also invested in an emergency food kit that came with a cooking pot and utensils and a small cooker. 25 year shelf life

so if we had to we could filter pond water, add too the dehydrated food and cook it, and it is all packed and eady to go.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Today I will be setting connibear traps. As cantelope and watermelons begin to produce, my "community salad bar" also becomes the snack hotspot of the county.
I got most of a hotwire barrier up yesterday. 90% done. I either need to find more insulators in my shed, make more or buy more to complete that.

What state allows trapping in July when animals have young ones depending on them?

Good point. No comment. OPSEC.

On the other hand, many PEOPLE depend on me for food.

I understand your point and I agree.
When your neighbors are worthless inevery way, their garden is about 8'X12' and is now a weed patch......3 dogs with tangled chains......a feline plague in the junkyard next door.......every coon and possum within 3/4 mile is going to eat more than me.....and if there is one weakness in my defense hot wire, they'll find it and take 40 hours work in one night.

I don't feel that generous. With the critters OR THE NEIGHBORS.

I'm working on trails throughout the woods around me. Lots of poaching last year, including my neighbors.

It's going to stop. I tag legally. I enjoy the added challenge of bow hunting.
I took my first big buck at 10'. I'll never forget the look on his face when he realized I WASN"T a doe in heat.........
Not by accident either.
