Especially if I've told you for years to do this or buy that, instead you bought the new big screen....

I'm not sure what you meant by that implicating statement since you didn't clarify.
While it is good to know who else is prepared, if you come to take what isn't yours,

Dehydrated 10 pounds of Roma tomatoes. Cut in half or quarter the big ones, core out seeds with a teaspoon, sprinkle with a little oregano, basil and salt. Dehydrate for about 15 hours, vacuum sealed in a freezer bag with my other homegrown veggies.

Side note, went ot Harris Teeter and they want $2.50 per red bell pepper. Got about 40 green ones in the back yard. Easy to grow and dehydrate well in my Excaliber.

Thinking about retilling the garden and replanting another batch of crooked neck squash, broccoli and some butternut squash, should be ready around September. No frost here until well into October (VA-Chesapeake).

If you are stashing candles, get some gel candle wax. Stick a wick inside a thick glass jar (use a hot glue gun to stick the metal wick tab to the bottom of the jar), melt the gel and pour inside the container. Wrap the wick around a pencil and lay across the rim of the jar to keep the wick straight. An oz. of this gel wax will burn for around 15 hours. So for 10 oz. of gel you will have about 150 hours of burn time.

Those of us that aren't sheep and are aware of how this civilization is in decline, whether end of the age or solar doom....
We work towards trying to ensure our survival. It may be buying an extra dozen canned goods each trip to the store.
Could be your garden.
I have a gardening thread. There have been alot of good contributions for that.
Here's a link:

Thread: Gardening, take another look before winter

What I would like most here is advice, links to water filters, gear, things you've found that will help you weather the storm that is quickly building.

Methods you've developed to enhance your actions. Like the paper mulch suggested for gardening. Or how putting out a bird feeder and watering bird bath attracts the birds that will eat the bugs around your garden.
I've done those things and the bugs have vanished...

If you're armed, how about gear tips, or ammo deals or....

Myself, I'm busting my butt in a big garden. Some days up at 2 am or earlier, woking with lights at night because the sun is killing us during the day.

Last year I learned rebuilding chainsaws. This year I'm learning ATV's. Bought an old quad cheap, fixed all the problems and about to start on a 3 wheeler I bought for $94..

As far as weapons, yeah I like guns. I'm a pretty fair gunsmith. I reload. I shoot high power rifle.
I have however downsized alot. I'm down to one pistol right now. It and one rifle is all I can carry if I bug out....
And a big pack of course.

Keep it civil. Be polite. Thank you ahead of time.

Any posts that are not constructive and contribute in some beneficial way will be removed.

(Except my wasted posts, of coursetounge)

Any posters that are disruptive will be blocked.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
I researched drip irrigation today. I'm exploring the possibility of drip irrigating about 2,000 row feet of crops. Drip irrigation is very efficient with the water.

Otherwise we will drain our pond if we try to just flood the crops with a gas powered pump. As it is the harvests are heavily dependent on rain. There are several wells on the property from pumps require electricity and heavy maintenance when you start pumping thousands of gallons a day. And wells dry up.

Come Sept. 1st I'll have $3,000 to spend on prepping. Atleast a grand will be to restock my depleted food stuffs (last year was rough for my household and we decimated an honest 3 month supply of stored up food). The rest can go any direction I want it to. I'll be buying some ammo, some fence wire, some tools, non-food supplies, etc. I'm very concerned that this will be the last time I get to spend a large sum on prepping. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't make it until tax return season.

I'm wanting to try that. I helped disassemble 3 75' greenhouses 2 1/2 years ago. worked my butt off for 4 days, 95 degree hot sunny days. Humped about 300 cinder block for an addition...(that the Mayor didn't want till after I had them loaded)....tore down a drip system that nobody wanted. Dug up 30' of 1/2" copper tubing to a propane tank nobody wanted to dig....then it was "I paid for it"
Old bastage.
3 more days work put into a greenhouse making parts for others' greenhouses....still don't have one.

He'd prefer to argue about whether he promised me a whole one or if he promised to supply plastic and wiggle wire or not.....What is left is sitting in a pile and the drip system and a big ball of shading material (that nobody wanted) is rotting in the sun......shit.
I finally got 30-40 % of one, spent 2 days assembling pieces, got ready to put it up and he came up behind me and started yelling at me like I'm a retarded child.
(well, maybe I am?). So I disassembled it and put it back into a pile. Fukk him.

Old fool. Still no greenhouse.

My pantry has run down in just a couple of areas, mostly fats and oils, it's a priority to build that back up, got a liter of olive oil today and will keep buying olive oil and coconut oil and some butter to freeze til I have it back where it was this time last year.

Spotted a good deal on canned beans today and going to go back when I can carry more, canned beans are about my most favorite thing to stock up on right now.

Just this week got a large order of vitamins, glad someone mentioned vitamins. Supplements and herbs and natural medicines are super good to have around regardless of any doom scenario.

I refuse to cow down in fear of my government. Keeping some food and extra ammo is my right and I keep them. I am not plotting anything but survival.

I will not change because of tyrants. I will not hide my face. I have food. I have ammo. Tough. So do millions of others. Every true country home has weeks or more of food....and ammo.

If you have explosives stacked up alongside your green beans then you might want to keep hush hush about all that. But I do not, so I do not fear that my typing the word "explosives" online is going to get me sent to a FEMA camp.

About a year. And once exposed to air not as long. Oil will actually go rancid w/o any indication (until it gets really bad). Rancid oil is several times more harmful to your arteries than fresh oil.

Hydrogenated oils keep longest. Crisco. It all lasts longer in the fridge. I've never heard of freezing it, but the colder the better I guess, so long as it doesn't make the oil fall apart or something.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Howdy Henry,

Here is a video which explains how to simply make copper arrowheads from copper pipe with minimal tools. I think it's the easiest way to do this versus flintknapping from stone. When I was very young and wanting to learn primitive skills, then I was taught to use the bottoms of discarded glass bottles and a tool (a bit of copper pushed into a handle) and to chip away to form a sharp edge with it by flaking it off. It makes something much like an obsidian arrowhead.

Of course this means access to copper pipe, files, a vise, etc. Almost everyone could make the glass arrowheads.

Re removing oil from food grade plastic barrels

My barrels have a removable lid with a metal clamp to ensure integrity. I don't know about yours. In mine, I entered into them and scrubbed them out with some dawn dish liquid and a scrubby and rinsed them numerous times, then used a mild bleach solution, then rinse them an insane amount of times to remove that too. Then I clamped them off to keep them pristine and ready for use.

It might be that you can't use them for water. I hope you can.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
One of the very best ways you can prep is to watch a documentary called Frontier House. It was made many years ago for public broadasting and can be found in public libraries or purchased.
[link to www.pbs.org]

In that reality experiment, they took non-preppers with few agrarian skills, and put them in Montana for a period to see if they could make it. They had various tools that a pioneer family might have as they arrived, or that they could purchase from local suppliers.

It really would be far more difficult in reality, but watching the episodes shows you what you could reasonably expect to have to do day-to-day. It also shows the stress of living under those circumstances, and the issues of sanitation, malnutrition, boredom, lack of sex, lack of romance, muscle soreness, harvesting from animals, lack of abundance, etc that would occur. We would be blessed to have as many tools and supplies as those folks in the series.

There also was a great series on living in the Yukon and trapping and moving from primitive shelter to shelter and occasionally foraging from the land. Can't remember the name, but I think it was this one.
[link to dsc.discovery.com]

Seems like there was a female tough old bird that went along too.

People think about bugging out and living off the land, a very unrealistic impossible long term solution. These videos will help you contemplate about the difficulties you are up against in making it. Only a third of people who trekked out West managed to stay. Many died of various causes, or lost it all simply because they couldn't handle it.

There was an enormous abundance of resources and species and skills in those days by comparison, and far lower population density, so you have to consider all of that

No, he's referring to freezing butter. Lots of people do that, it keeps well.
I sometimes freeze USED cooking oil. Like if I use 2-3 cups of peanut oil for frying squash. It keeps pretty good for a couple days but will get nasty. I can freeze it and use the same oil a few times for that.
