Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Garden is watered. Second trap is set for the groundhawg that has eaten/wasted 5 or more cantelope in the last 4 days. Alot of the fruit gets picked,a few bites or gouges before deciding that other one, over there, looks/smells better and ruining another.

2 watermelons in the softball size range had black spots, like some tomatoes i picked 2 days ago.
Too wet?
Added to bait in the holes under the connibear traps.

for the new trap on the backside of the garden had to get out my "johnson bar", 6' long about 1 1/4" square end, 15" long to a tapered handle. After removing the 6" of topsoil dust, the ground is concrete.
my back is feeling almost back to normal, whatever that is......maybe i should split wood with my 12# splitting maule/battle ax for a couple hours?

I also moved the water pan outside of the hotwire perimeter.

This may not seem significant, but I have young children. Today I am teaching them how to sew. My daughter is also learning how to knit. She is eight and knows how to can preserves and use the solar oven.

Both my little ones know how to catch fish using the native fish trap. Both know a few ways to find clean water sources, recognize wild edible plants and make a shelter and fire. My four year old just mastered using a manual can opener!

As much as I can prepare for things, the best thing I can do is teach my kids to not take things for granted. Teach them that even at a young age they are not useless or helpless.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Just picked 2 bushel of peppers.
At least 1 or 2 from each plant. Picked anything with brown spots, touching the ground or stuck in the middle of the plant, those are hard to pick as they get bound up into the branches without breaking branches off. I tried to leave something growing on each plant too.

Some are so heavy with fruit that I could pick 10 large bananas and still have 10-15 growing.
Broke one plant off dragging around the hose......
I have a habit of pounding 18" rebar into the ground at the end of rows that I always drag the hose around. Helps a bunch. Should have done that row a long time ago.....

I only picked half of the peppers I could have. I wonder if Subway in town, or the pizza place would do some bartering???

Some green bells are larger than softball size.

Water. The most important but not mentioned much in this thread.
While I have a Royal Berkey. I also like the Monolithic products:

Some good options for cheaper setups, using your own buckets and such.

Here's a good one for your back pack or bugout kit:

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Posted this on another thread but thought it could go here as well:

My wife always gets on me to dump used cooking oil (Canola, peanut, vegetable, etc.). I now save used spaghetti sauce glass jars (Ragu, Bertolli) and the lids. You can also reuse yankee candle type jars. Place 2-3 inches of sand in the bottom and fill with used cooking oil. Take a wooden chop stick or thin stick (hardwood is best) wrap a cotton ball around the stick and add some to the tip. Trim the stick to be no higher than the lip of the jar. Dip the tip in the oil, then place base firmly in the sand. Let it soak for a few hours. You now have an oil lamp that will last for days and cost you nothing.

Tip: Place jar in a pan like an aluminum pie plate with some water if it will be left unattended. It still is dangerous- be careful.

Another tip:

Always carry a small bundle of cotton swabs and some petroleum jelly with your gear. Dipping the swab in the jelly creates a great candle that lasts and can make starting a fire much, much easier.

No cotton swabs? Save those Fritos! They are full of oil and light up very well and burn for a long time. The last tip was courtesy of Les Stroud. Gotta love re-purposing!

I think something is wrong when it takes me 20 minutes to find something I consider important.....
finally found my grav boots. did some upside down time. Gentle twisting and crunches. Also did a coating of glucosamine condroitin with dmso.

Always makes me feel better.

Also brought my Big Berkey water system back into the house. Lightly scrubbed the black filters with a scotch brite and scrubbed the inside of the stainless drums.
She's filled and I will shortly be drinking Chemtrail Barium, flouride, aluminum, whatever BS FREE water.

Hey, it's after noon.....late enough for a bourbon?

He will have a blast. Do it early in the morning with the rising sun behind you, before solar radz gets bad.

You'll be able to see into the water better too.

There will be one less ground hawg eating my cantelope this week. Trap #2 worked in 6 hours. One down, one to go.

Built a better?

Got some plans or a link?

I've been meaning to get a new dipole up,
80, 40, 20 meter.
119' 6" if i remember right, 2nd line, half, 3rd line half again, am I remembering right?

20 meter is CB too.

What would be good swr lengths for coax? I've been using 50', that's what I think I remember. 102", 9', what do you think? I think I used 50' to the vertical 5/8 wave ground plane, I think it's called. From back in my "Lumping" days.
I need to get out my old ARRL book, a bit outdated though.....from my novice days back in 1970 or so.....fukk I'm gettin old.....

How about a good SWR length for short runs? Vehicle or on my quad? Haven't got those tasks done yet.

I've got a big bundle of RG8U......Maybe 3 or 400 feet. Gave $20 for it at flea market. Last time i bought any new I think it was $1.15 per foot.....16 years ago.

I'm wanting to get out my old Heathkit short wave unit, one of the "top of the line" in her day, sidebander with VFO. Needs work. The tuning cables are long ago disintegrated.

Also thinking about adding one of those small photocell chargers to the Quad too. Batteries are down right now for no reason.....new sealed battery and an old one. Need to make the isolator and get it wired in to protect generator when running lights and radios, running them off the old battery.

Yup, one long list......

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Clipped from my garden thread:

Trap # 2 was cleaned out this morning.
Ground hawgs are good diggers for sure. I added a heavy 18" piece of 4"X4" angle iron, 3/8" thick, weighs about 30# next to the hole on the side that was dug out.
No garden damage this morning.

First round of peppers and one tray of maters are drying.
Garden is watered. Got pretty beat up yesterday. Some watermelon plants were quite wilted. Most look ok though.
Looks like I need to start processing this corn real quick.
Prolly 40-50 ears I could pick right now. I'll put that off a bit as they continue to fill out.
A lot is immature yet so I'll get a continuous flow of corn.

First watermelon continues to fill out.
Picked about 5 softball size down the hill that were rotting on one end. Too wet?

I just boiled 3 big cloves of garlic with all the pepper scraps for hopper repellent.
I added a dash of Neems and a dash of fruit tree virus spray. I filled one 2 gallon sprayer for the maters and maybe around the melons to repell the critters. With cantelope almost ripe, watermelons almost ripe, the remainng ground hawg will be determined to get at those.

The grasshoppers will become a problem real quick. I found one baseball mater that was half eaten....by grasshoppers.
I'm finding them more often in the big plants. We played this game last year.
Only a matter of time before they descend on my 2 cherrie tomatoe plants and eat them down to a nub.
A few of the zuch plants that critters ate all the leaves off of just as they were looking good are doing well. As long as they don't get munched and are watered they come back good.

Also filled my second 2 gal sprayer with permethrin to chase the big hoppers around. Also around the perimeter where they seem to be breeding and then moving into the garden.
Break over?

I rebaited both traps with the one watermelon that was picked and chewed on over a week ago. It's been sitting on my kitchen counter. Almost ripe even though smaller than a football by 1/3.

Endquote.

Battery charger is on the Quad. I want to ride, I miss it with the sore back.
Going down by the pond and plant some clover around there. Most of my deer plots are failing from lack of rain. I'll need another 5 or more pounds of clover seed to replant if it ever rains agin......

Trapped another ground hog in the garden today. Dehydrator is still going.
I've been drying seeds in the sun.
Seeds from the cantelope from the Omish are done. Another batch from peppers is outside.

Other than that, maybe cook my small zuchini from days ago.
