Re: What did you do to Prep today?
What did I do today to Prep? I Prayed and I will continue to pray everyday. I don't know what makes you preppers think that this planet will be survivable during or after what is about to take place. You are not going to be able to survive what is coming or what will continue for a few years. All the preparation in this world will not help. Prayer is the only thing that is guaranteed to save you.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1224842

We also have a promise, "unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days shall be cut short"......

Add prayer to that, of course.

Not all will die, that is the hope.

I should also reply in a stern way to this.

I do not believe in any vain rapture.

Being "tried in the fire" and going through the "Tibulation"
will be the greatest test of your soul possible.
Ain't gonna happen that you get to just skip the test, sorry.

Those of you that think your "faith" is going to save you, that FEMA is going to wipe your ass, that a rapture is going to save your butt, are living 30' above sea level, are living along the Mississipi river basin....enjoy being in Kalifornication for the weather and the babes, are screwed.
I'll repeat what I said before, don't count on something absolving you from the catastrophism that is going to occur, on top of WWIII, economic collapse, civil war in America, your local Congo population coming for you, if you can't prepare and cope, don't come running out here in the country side and expect me to share what I've scrimped and busted my ass and gone without the football games and the big screen to have......
Don't frikking show up in my yard raiding my garden or at my door with your hand out.

Concubine, compost or garden slave, not sure which category you fall into.

Made a few ounces of herbal ointment.

Made 4 pints of herbal insect repellent to give to friends.

Harvested several baskets of culinary herbs for drying.

Started another tumbler of compost.

The morning is still young. I may do something else today.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
My compost recipe.

Free standing:

Find a corner of the yard that is shady and moist. Begin by adding a layer of brown material to this corner. This could be carbon based such as brown paper bags, shredded brown leaves, cocoa hulls, finely shredded bark. Layer it about two inches deep. Next add a layer of grass clippings for nitrogen. On top of this, add vegetable waste, egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags, paper napkins and paper towels. No meat scraps or bones, fat, etc. No animal waste other than rabbit manure and pissy chicken hay and straw. ha ha.

On top of this add a shovel full of garden dirt to help activate the carbon/nitrogen ingredients. Keep layering each week, add a little water and maybe a pinch of lime to help sweeten the pile. You csn throw an old shower curtain over the compost to help break it down further. As you collect corn cobs, corn huskz, garden waste, add that as well. Turn the pile once a week, adding a shovel full of garden soil each time to help enrich the compost. Also, the soil is full of earthworms and castings.

Depending on the weather and temperatures, the compost should break down and be ready to use in about six weeks. Just in time for fall greens, lettuce, onions.

Once you have spread the compost on the garden, start another pile for late fall gardening.

You can also make this in a compost tumbler or the contractor heavy duty black plastic bags.

Henry, thank you for asking for my recipe.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Here you go, Henry. By the way, I'm a mam, not a sir.

4 Thieves Insect Repellent.

1 tablespoon each, dried lavender buds, sage, lemon balm, mint, thyme, orange peel, and 2 cloves of fresh garlic.

Place all the herbs in a quart size glass jar. A mason jar will do. Add enough apple cider vinegar to cover the herbs and fill the jar almost to the top. Seal the jar tightly. Place the jar in a cool, dark area for 30 days. Shake well, strain off the herbs and discard them in the compost pile before using the herb vinegar.

When you're ready to use this preparation, add about 1/4 cup of the mixture to a spray bottle and fill the bottle with water. Spray your socks and shoes with this mixture, spray your hat as well. Also arms and legs.

A natural mosquito, tick, flea, and chigger repellent. You can also spray a little of this on a wet wash cloth and wipe down outdoor pets, horses and livestock as well.

All natural, with no Deet or harmful chemicals in this preparation.

You can also spray it around picnic tables to keep the flies away.

Next my herbal ointment.

I love it. thank you.

I must have been in a daze this morning. Did planting and a few things like change Reds' oil.
Sorry I spaced out your website Madam. It does I'm sure have all your recipes. I/we appreciate your transcribing them here for us. Your 4 thieves sounds like a winner.

My brain feels toasted. Didn't get the darn corn done though.
Tomorrow I hope. 13 ears that I had cut the wormy ends off and cut the bottoms close, peeled most of the husks off of when I picked them are getting dry. so I shucked those and they are now drying on the porch to become seed corn.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
This is my recipe.

To prepare an infused oil.

You will need a clean quart jar that is completely dry inside.

Place 1/2 cup of the dried herb of choice inside the glass jar and add enough good-quality olive oil or canola oil to full cover the dried herbs. Cover the jar with wax paper and secure it with a rubber band. It needs to breathe, so don't use the canning ring or lid. Let the oil infuse in a sunny window for 10 days. Strain off the plant material and discard it in the trash. Now you may use the canning lid and ring. Place them on top of the jar and tighten it gently.

The oil is now ready to use for making creams, balms, ointments and salves.

Some herbs that can be used for infused oils.

Calendula - soothing skin

St. John's wort- skin infections

Basil- wrinkles

Sage - for fungus infections

Thyme- anti-biotic and skin restoration

Lavender- blemishes and spots

Lemon balm- dry heels and elbows

Mint- dry patchy skin and pimples

This is how to prepare an ointment using the infused oil.

Warm, but do not boil, 1/2 cup of the infused oil in a small sauce pan. Add 3 tablespoons of cocoa butter, 1/2 ounce of melted beeswax, and the cotents of 6 vitamin B capsules.

Stir this together until blended and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes. Pour the mixture into small plastic containers with lids. Press either a sage, mint, or basil leaf on top. Seal the ointment with a small round circle of wax paper. Place the lids on tightly and store the ointment at room temperature for up to one year.

I make these for friends who work outdoors and have rough skin and small abrasions. It heals minor scratches and insect bites. It also heals rough, dry skin on your feet and elbows.

Another 1/2 bushel of peppers dry and into quart jar. Another batch cut up and in the DH.
The continue to ripen.
They are getting redder and sweeter.

Think I just learned something.

ALMOST done with the 3 bushel.
I'm going to cut up what remains and stick into fridge. Might go into corn, it'll add alot of color too.

Corn today?

No. Not really. That's a game meat of last resort. How about substituting it with porcupine? I think you'll like it better. Tastes like pork, well kinda.

But if you're determined you're supposed to capture it and feed it for several days. Remember they eat anything including dead things like...roadkill opossum.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Good God, this is kicking my butt.

Feet hurt, back is getting sore. I've got another 50 ears to cut.
I'm about half way through.

Maybe 2 gallons of cut corn so far.

It gets nasty pretty quick if you let picked corn sit. I think I picked Friday?
Worms were at 1" or so from tip when picked, some are down the side. Ears that I had pulled alot of the husks off and cut the ends off were drying out. Cut the ends again. The dryest were added to the seed pile. Maybe 30 of those total now.
Even sitting on the ounter they were starting to dimple.
Soaking plumped them back up a bit.
I thik I'll have almost a full 3 gallon pot by the time I'm done. I'll prolly use the whole 1 1/2 gallon of peppers I cut this morning.
I've got a 5 gallon turkey deep fry pot, that's what I'll mix it all in.
Cook lightly before packing my jars.
I don't like the tool that surrounds the corn with a handle to cut it all at once.
I want to scrape the husk with back of a kife even if it did.
More bother than it's worth. Taking care not to cut off the end of my thumb with a nife.

Saved 8 of the largest ears for the fridge and dinner maybe tomorrow.

I added 20 to the drying pile for seed.
It's coming but I'm wooped.
Took some pics.

If seeds one day are worth more than gold like they have at times in the past I'm going to be well off.

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
Gonna be one of those half the night deals. I see it coming.
Dumped the corn into the big turkey pot.
Dumped in the big bowl of peppers from this morning.
Added about 2 gallons of water and stirred it up.
I don't like cooking in aluminum, I might see how much would fit into my stainless 3 gallon and put the reat into a big blue ceramic canner pot. (Didn't).
It's chinese night. Gonna go watch the tube for a bit with Red and have supper.

I use a cast iron skillet under my pots sometinmes, it helps keep stuff from sticking and burning. Eliminates the hot spots that tend to burn.
I turn the pancake skillet upside down and place big pot on top. Heat is on low. Should be fine while I eat and get pressure cookers ready and jars...
Oh boy.......clappa

Re: What did you do to Prep today?
From my gardening thread:

I can do 30 pints at a time. 20 in the tall Presto and 10 in the regular one.
I've got 36 pints.
I added 1/4 cup of salt and 2 cups of sugar. Why?
Hell I don't know. I just do shit.

Both canners are up to pressure.

I couldn't get 6 in so I took 4 out of the big canner, it'll heat quicker and then I have one full batch for the small canner tomorrow.

Almost saddening to think how much physical labor is involved getting 36 16oz jars.

I think Aldi grocery still sells 12oz metal cans of most produce, corn, beans, peas for 50 cents/can.

I've got 36 16 oz, that's 30% more than if they were 12 oz.

36 X 1 1/3 = 48.

I just spent 14 hours doing this. Minus 2 hours for breaks, 1 hour nap, lets call it 10 hours.
An hour picking.
An hour on a tractor tilling the first time (just the corn area), An hour planting. 3 hours weeding over 2 months.
I water an hour once a day if it's not too hot.
Twice when it's real hot and it's frying the plants.

Over 2 months lets say once a week, one hour.
8 hours.

Total 23 hours to get $24 worth of corn with peppers.......oh, lets add the time into peppers.....

Dammit man.

Ya'all gonna starve.

My fuggin feet hurt.
