When the stores are closed you'll be in good shape for barter. I have 50 lbs of brown unrefined salt from the farm srore. It also has the trace elements that ae a big part of good health. A whole lot cheaper, I think it was $20. You can educate the ignorant, but you can't fix stupid! |

How about substituting it with porcupine? I think you'll like it better. Tastes like pork, well kinda. But if you're determined you're supposed to capture it and feed it for several days. Remember they eat anything including dead things like...roadkill opossum. [link to southernliving.blogsome.com] Nope, not going to that link. I'm eating ground veni with fresh cut peppers and Bush beans. Yum. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17491778 You gun lovers have not got a HOPE when TSHTF. They make too much noise..are too heavy..and give your position away to anyone for miles. A bow..is silent...light...deadly..and the ammo is reusable again and again and again..plus you can MAKE it from whatevers lying around. Gun are only good in a firefight....but USELESS for survival and STEALTH. +1 very true. i have been meaning to buy a compoud bow but keep prokrastinating DO NOT waste money on a compound. Where ya gonna find a BOW press out in the woods when one of the million and one fiddly sensetive bits on it fucks up? Compound bows are WORSE than useless..worse than guns really. Forget compound..when TSHTF..you need a good takedown recurve and or a decent longbow..60 pound on each. hey while agree wth you about recurves being the better choice for many reasons you dont need a bow press to repair a compound bow. |

Once over-the-road shipping comes to a stop, people will find that they can grow/hunt their own food and dig wells for their own water, but they are fucked when it comes to procuring their own salt. As mankind's civilizations advanced away from the seashores and into the interiors of the continents, we never traveled any farther from a salt source than commerse and trade could bridge the gap. Once commerse and trade come to a stop, people will start dying of salt deprivation. Everyone knows that: You can't go more than three minutes without air. You can't go more than three days without water. You can't go more than three weeks without food. But few realize that you can't go more than ONE week without salt. |

You can't go more than three days without water. You can't go more than three weeks without food. But few realize that you can't go more than ONE week without salt. I'm working on a posting about this very subject, both from a human need for nutrition, for preserving food, and for barter post shtf. In the interim while I prepare that article, one thing that all people should do is search google books for their state plus salt licks. For example, in Missouri, salt licks were found and utilized in Howard County at Boone Lick. From there, an operation was developed and then shipped, probably via flatboats down river. See: [link to books.google.com] There are several options, but rather than going into the methods of harvesting salt (and there are several), I'll be posting them over at my regular section in a few days. It would be very wise to both have salt on hand and also to know where you might be able to acquire it later. Realize that salt has iodine in it too in order to prevent goiters. Iodine keeps the thyroid operating properly. Post-45, many people become hyper and then settle out hypothyroid. In a collapse without iodine sources (now from salt), then you'd see these conditions again in YOUNG people. What little salt you had, you wouldn't ever trade it away, as it's very difficult to acquire. |
