Re: X Marks the Spot
I watched a movie one time when I was a teen. I have no frame of reference for the name of the movie or any scene other than the one I am about to relay.

Essentially, a girl, a mother's child was about to be forced to serve in combat, in a country foreign to this one, which allowed said.

The mother in this movie, to keep her daughter, around 16 or so, from being forced into combat, chose to burn her daughters legs severely with either an iron or hot water while she screamed in pain.

I remember being so horrified and conflicted that a mother would 'love' her child so much that she would choose to maim her, before allowing her to war.

It sticks with me to this day.

...
 Quoting: Seer777

I don't believe that is love but pure selfishness. Love would never under any circumstances in my opinion maim their child.
I would make them run away from said circumstance's rather than to cause harm from the one person they are supposed to trust.
Maybe my reasoning is a bit tainted tho based on what I have been thru.

Yes...that is why I had such a hard time with it. But at the same time, in the movie the mother was desperate to keep her daughter out of combat. There was also an element of loose agreement between the mother and daughter but I don't think she knew what her mother would do...

It reminds me of something else as well, it was a couple of years later and again I only remember a specific scene.

The scene was again in a foreign country. There was a group of boys playing outside, all between 10-12 or so. A van pulled up with armed soldiers of the country the boys lived.

They forced all of them into the van with the implicit intention in the movie of making them 'child soldiers'...

My mother was next to me as I watched this. She got up and left the room crying.

As I watched her leave, I turned back to the screen seeing only an empty schoolyard holding a lone soccer ball where the boys once played, and an empty living room I now inhabited.

hugs I can relate to the feelings. My son in the Navy turned 18 on July 11th and left for boot camp July 23rd It was a decision he surprised me with on His part. I cried for a month after he left missing him terribly and then on top of that Hurricane Katrina hit and that compounded the pain of his leaving. I wasn't ready for him to leave home so soon and to such a Job. I am proud of him tho he has fair'd well in his job and also protected in what he does to a large degree. The Empty nest thing was very hard on me. I put so much into my boys and was beside my self when my youngest left to live with his dad for awhile and to get to know him , but he eventually came back home. He needed to find out what his father was like. That was a rough patch to go thru and was going thru the 2nd menopause as well. The first was cause of a hysterectomy, ( Still had my ovaries tho)

I believe most go into the military due to a strong desire to help others.

I don't believe most feel they have done said, after they are relieved from the responsibility after having seen combat...

My best friend during my teens and early twenties suddenly told me one day he was considering joining the Marines.

This was in 2000. As we sat in his car arguing over his choice, I said to him that war was coming and that if he chose to enlist he would face said.

He laughed at me.

He joined the Marines, and I supported him for it after he made the choice. Even flying down to San Diego to see him 'graduate'.

On 9/11/01 it was his message on the answering machine which woke me.

By that time the towers had already fallen.

He served 3 combat duties, and came back with the scars to show for it...

I have known a couple of soldiers who came back from Desert storm with the scars from it as well. Fortunately my son has yet to see the face of combat and has been spared so far going to a war torn area. He has mentioned that after this tour he is thinking of getting out because he has mad skills already in the IT field. I pray that he does not have to go but if he stays in it is inevitable I suppose. Something I have tossed around in my heart and it did not feel very good. :(

Pointless war, pointless death, pointless horror.

Hi Seer hf

Yes.

It is that as well. Even if one feels one has no choice but to 'accept'.

For example, a military chain of command. One is told what to do, and one must accept or be met with discipline.

Which brings me around to the topic of the 'rogue bagel' which JAD also provided.

To go "rogue" means to make a large deviation from one's strict training.

To 'go rogue' in the military example would be met with harsh consequence. One would be free of the previous path before going 'rogue' but would then be met a separate path due the choice.

While freeing his or herself from one path, they have potentially chained themselves to another.

To avoid this, people will do what they are told regardless of moral consequence to themselves or others.

It is the threat of punishment which keeps it going. In weak moments, where one may question the chain of command, the threat of punishment always lingers.

Interesting.

Yes that Chain is a heavy yoke to bare in the face of doing something against your personal and moral values. I experienced said while I was in and was part of my counseling to get over said occurrence. There are other things that happen in there as well that injure ones abilities to trust other humans that you think you should be able to. It is a mentality the permeates because of the indifference one adopts to go against personal morals and values. Robotic feelings in the making to "obey" as you stated. It was suck it up or you are weak. Back then tho the things I did experience were a cake walk to what occurred at home . Long gone in the past and blown over like a candle in the wind now but many lessons learned.

Tell tale sign is the silence now... It's not a dream if we all come together and forget the petty bullshit...had to be said on this thread...but only because this thread gets so many views...and most know it's true what I speak...

Beyond this thread this message goes...come together sisters...I know of no other way...
