Quoting: JasmineinNM I feel sorry for the little baby piglets. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx A virus that kills young pigs is roiling the U.S. pork industry, boosting prices in the $9 billion hog-futures market and threatening to create more pain for food shoppers. The disease, which has spread to farms in 22 states, is cutting into pork supplies and prompting some traders and investors to wager that hog prices could set records this year. Lean-hog futures rose to a seven-week high a week ago and are up 6% since mid-December. Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, or the PED virus, appeared in the U.S. for the first time in April and has killed thousands of piglets since then. The virus, which causes severe diarrhea and vomiting, is fatal only to young pigs and poses no threat to human health or food safety, according to swine veterinarians. The U.S. strain is nearly identical to a version that curbed hog production in China in 2012. "This is the toughest disease we've ever gone through," said Mike Brandherm, a general manager with Hitch Pork Producers, a Guymon, Okla., livestock producer that lost 30,000 piglets in six weeks in a 2013 outbreak. "It was stunning how fast the disease spread. You feel helpless." [link to www.foxnews.com] lol. That is in part, a scene from Spirited Away. A scene I post often here. What causes these things is giant animal Factories instead of farms. It is like how staph infections are common in hospitals, even though the environment is constantly sterilized. Much of the live stock is bought from very large mills and that is where these infections originate from. The over breeding with careless disregard for the animals welfare. Basically this is proof livestock was never meant to be produced the way we are going about it now. Too few producers with too many animals, combined with all the drugs it takes to keep them healthy in these overpopulated conditions is causing new diseases. |

You are right on the money :arewhatueat: i got some country know how in the tool box. The sad part is producers know this is the problem. Even if you want to stay small and organic in your livestock you have to start from scratch with your own organic bloodline because all the young livestock that is affordable comes from these mills. Then you go under because your overhead is far too high to compete with the mass producers. |

People will have to 'buy' their meat elsewhere purposely to see any change, unless something like a widespread virus runs through. Which many have started to do. Those that is, who can afford and choose to buy properly raised and slaughtered animals... I think it is much a problem with fast food.
