(CNN) -- It's Christmas, but not as you know it: a new book released this week by Pope Benedict XVI looks at the early life of Jesus -- and debunks several myths about how the Nativity unfolded.

In "Jesus of Nazareth -- The Infancy Narratives," the pope says the Christian calendar is actually based on a blunder by a sixth century monk, who Benedict says was several years off in his calculation of Jesus' birth date.

According to the pope's research, there is also no evidence in the Gospels that the cattle and other animals traditionally pictured gathered around the manger were actually present.

He also debunks the claim that angels sang at the birth, a staple theme of Christmas carols.

The book, which is being published in multiple languages in time for Christmas, is the third in a series by the pontiff. The previous two volumes dealt with Jesus' adult life and his public ministry.

Alessandro Speciale, Vatican correspondent for the Religion News Service, told CNN the pope was not so much aiming to debunk myths as trying to show that the Jesus depicted in the Gospels is a real historical figure, who walked on earth and talked to people like anyone else.

The pope also looks at scholarly studies of the Bible, some of which have indicated for decades that the traditionally accepted birth date for Jesus is wrong, Speciale said.

I've been through fear. I don't know how it could be any worse...except for fear for my family.

For myself, I don't see how I could become fearful again.

oh yes I can identify about my family as well. I guess sep one never knows until face to face with certain fearful things I don't know...but as for fearing end of the world...aliens etc...I have dealt with those types of fears and feel so much differently about those topics than years before :)

First time and only time I ever hyperventilated in fear was one of them standing over me in bed on December 21st, 2007. I would be considered somewhat 'fearless' for the most part.

After dealing with numerous visitations in 2008/2009, I learned to control and master that fear.

Then, their is hell, or the lower astral realms. I won't get into all that. But, I learned the power of the soul down there.

lol, I just wrote a bunch of stuff and deleted it. Busy mall, and being naked and all that.

I've been through fear. I don't know how it could be any worse...except for fear for my family.

For myself, I don't see how I could become fearful again.

They make great margaritas in hell. Unfortunately the taste never changes.

lol, uhoh.

It's really when you find out how much those about you love you. I challenged my uncle one christmas and my folks got it all on videotape.

The freeing moment is when you realize that you've never held back any demons and no matter the things you say or do in that tequila induced fugue, it all becomes entertainment to the ones who love you.

Heck, in my case I found that most folks preferred the blasted me.

They've got quite a few crazy things down there, most of it to distract you from going any further.
