In order to change that routine, they must first admit that the routine is a direct threat to their long term health. They must also have a motivation to live without that routine. 'Denying oneself' does not mean just endlessly indulging oneself without a care in the world. It means to look at yourself and not see the plain truth of what you are and what motivates you. Look at the original quote from a different perspective. By denying ourselves what we need, we're forced to indulge in what we want, instead.
