Re: X Marks the Spot

(snip)
The most prominent open cluster in Scutum is the Wild Duck Cluster, M11. It was named by William H. Smyth in 1844 for its resemblance in the eyepiece to a flock of ducks in flight.

(snip)
The word Scutum comes from the Indo-European root *skei- 'To cut, split'. Derivatives: shin¹, shinbone (< 'piece cut off'), chine (from Old French eschine, backbone, piece of meat with part of the backbone), science, conscience, consciousness, conscious, nice (from Latin nescire, 'not to know'), conscientious (from Latin scire, to know < 'to separate one thing from another,' discern), shit (the sense here is of 'separating' excrement from the body), schism, schist, schizo-, (these words from Greek skhizein, to split), scission, exscind, prescind, rescind, (these words from Latin scindere, to split), shed¹ ('give off, drop' shed tears, blood, or skin), sheath (< 'split stick'), ski (snow or water skis, from Old Norse skidh), ecu, escudo (type of coins), escutcheon (a shield), esquire (from Latin scutarius, 'shield-bearer'), scutum, squire, (these words from Latin scutum, shield < 'board'), shiver², scute (plates or scales on the shell of a turtle or the underside of a snake), scutellate (covered with shieldlike bony plates or scales), scutage (shield money). The Romans used their shields to create a tortoise-like formation called a testudo in which entire groups of soldiers would be enclosed in an armored box to provide protection against missiles. The Latin word testudo (Testudo was a name for adjacent Lyra) is given to the ancient Roman protective shelter formed by soldiers with shields overlapping above their heads when attacking a fort. Scutum is related to the word scute; scutes are plates or scales on the shell of a turtle or the underside of a snake.

(snip)
The root of scutum is related to the word sky (according to Klein and others). There is a relationship in mythology with the sky and shields. Varro says that Ennius called the heavens the caeli clipeus, "the shield of the sky".

(snip)
Our word 'sky' is seen etymologically in terms of cloud, from an old Norse word for cloud sky, and Old Saxon skio, 'cloud'. The English language seems to be unique in this substitution of cloud for the heavens, perhaps the notion being that clouds shield the earth from too much solar radiation and insulate the Earth from losing valuable heat into space. A well-polished shield was seen to have the reflective properties of a mirror, as the sky is reflected in the sea. The word sky is related to Gothic skuggwa 'mirror'. These meanings suggest a daylight sky in which clouds create shadows and reflections can be seen in water. The common Latin term for sky was caelus from Caelum (another constellation) from which we get our word 'celestial'.

(snip)
The word consciousness, the state or condition of being conscious, comes from the same root as Scutum, from the Latin verb scire, 'to know' or 'to be conscious of'. "Buddhists call the state of consciousness 'mirror-like awareness': The self is completely transparent to itself, can see and be itself fully, just like looking in the mirror" [5]. Perseus, who carries the Gorgon Medusa's severed head, was not able to look at the dreaded Medusa directly where to gaze upon the monster was to be turned to stone — but he was able to see her form reflected in a shield of polished bronze, thereby avoiding her gaze

for me they confirm the rising charge in our atmosphere and the inevitable affect the additional charge has on our personalities

which goes hand in hand with the non material dimensional restructuring that arises from the increased electricity forcing the restructuring to occur

leading to wider vision of what exists thus reconfiguration of our definitions of what we are and what we are within to be what we are

this opens the way to our emotional recognition of other somethings being emotionally alive (conscious) outside of our traditional recognition that emotional experience is limited to people, angels and god

okay, i have a witness

it is just dark here in the center of this metropolis and at 7.53 pm i imagine there are 15 million people around me

i open the french windows to walk onto the terrace and the witness put the terrace lights on

as the lights went on an OWL landed on the terrace railing 5 ft from us, looked me in the eyes for 10 seconds, then flew away

6 hours with no power, and I felt every minute.

We have at least two things in common seer.

I have four reef tanks. One has three mangroves in it. I'm finding I'm having the most luck growing zooanthids and LPS corals.

I have some cool frogspawn and torch's. I also have had some good success with birdsnest.
The engravings translate to "This space intentionally left blank."

The prayer is inscribed in an ancient script, rarely used today. It seems to be a philippic against small insects, absent-mindedness, and the picking up and dropping of small objects.

The gate is open; through it you can see a desolation, with a pile of mangled bodies in one corner. Thousands of voices, lamenting some hideous fate, can be heard.
The way through the gate is barred by evil spirits, who jeer at your attempts to pass.

...and star polyps. They grow like wildfire. I've got them in all 4 tanks now...all from the same piece that was originally about 4 x 3 inches.

Now there's at least 1 and a half square feet of it all together.

You like to nurture Life.

That is an excellent trait.

I started my reef tank around 2000 while I was in college.

As you can imagine during that time I have had many failures and abundances.

The most recent being this last January during the Storms.

I was at my beach house and the Power went out here for perhaps several days, if not a week.

After 12 years of supporting and nurturing IT, I felt quite betrayed by fate.

However, after some care...the mushrooms have come back, the florescent green polyps, and anemones.

I never really had the Light to support coral, although I attempted it many times.

Oh wow. That's a healthy looking brain...and some beautiful montipora.

One of my monti's bleached and died just last month. It was quite a curious affair, since the one sitting right next to it seems healthier than ever.

But that's what I love about reefing. The mystery of what happens in your little tank. Seems like every time you really examine it up close, you see something that wasn't there before.

You see much. My wife just happened to DVR a program about the mantis shrimp.

It was, indeed, the first thing we ever DVR'd.

The force of the physical blow of the mantis shrimp's 'hammer' is insignificant compared to the bubble of compressive force used to generate the momentum of the swing.
